Chapter 57: Devil Logos (2)

━Th. . . is absurd. . .
Bypfelheim’s Devil Fyumeronscan muttered his last words. He was in a terrible state. His right arm was gone from the shoulder, all the horns on his head were broken, and his entire body was riddled with fatal wounds.
Five deep claw marks tore open his flank, spilling his insides, and a paladin’s sword embedded itself in his abdomen and chest. Fyumeronscan slowly fell forward. And then he didn’t move anymore.
Thud. Ulca collapsed. Ulca’s therianthropy had lifted, and she had returned to her diminutive stature. Ulca’s condition wasn’t very good either.
“Aargh, kaagh, kaagh.”
Ulca curled up, her body trembling. The devil’s greatsword mangled her right wrist, exposing the bone, and large gashes marred her abdomen and thighs.
The frost from the devil’s magic had turned her as pale as if she had frostbite, and if she didn’t take action soon, her flesh would start to fall off.
“A, Are you alright, Ulca-nim?”
Hailyn approached, limping. Jess was unconscious, sprawled on a nearby rock. Hailyn had just finished removing Jess’s gauntlets and bracers, and he had tied his two arms tightly across his chest with bandages. Ulca spoke, trembling.
“Ugh, do you. . . think. . .this looks alright?”
Hailyn smiled wryly.
“It is not.”
Hailyn had a large gash on one side of his forehead, and the blood that flowed from it covered his left eye. The blood, which covered half of his face, painted over his tanned appearance with a deep crimson hue.
There were several cracks in his once-sturdy armor. The devil’s head-on punch had shattered and fallen off his shoulder plate, leaving a dent in the center of his breastplate.
The shield, which had previously deflected any monster’s attacks, now bore dents. Despite this, he fared better than Jess, who suffered injuries to both arms.
“S, So cold.”
“It’s due to the devil’s magic. I’ll get rid of the magic right away.”
Hailyn knelt down. The Paladin also suffered a broken leg at the shin, but he gritted his teeth and endured the pain.
A faint divine power flowed out of his palms, dispelling the devil’s magic that had been interfering with Ulca’s regenerative powers. He couldn’t treat her wounds directly.
Hailyn and Ulca were priests who served different gods, and their powers did not work on each other. That was why Hailyn focused not on casting healing light but on nullifying the devil’s magic.
When Hailyn had dispelled all of Fyumeronscan’s magic, Ulca’s wounds began to heal bit by bit. The bloodline of the powerful beastkin and the power of the moon were slowly healing her. Ulca, who had been shivering from the cold that had engulfed her entire body, finally spoke.
“Thank you, warrior. I think I’ll live.”
“I’m glad.”
Hailyn also collapsed next to Ulca and tended to his own wounds. He no longer had the strength to stand. The devil of the Ice Realm was so powerful.
Just then, the only one who hadn’t suffered a single wound walked over with a thud.
The dragon had shrunk significantly in size. It always breathed the breath of lightning at Fyumeronscan, and now it was about the size of a large dog. The wings, which had been much larger and longer than its body, were now much smaller.
Ulca, whose wounds had healed a little, and Hailyn, who had also treated his own body with divine power, looked at the approaching dragon with dull eyes.
It was like watching a penguin. It walked bipedally with its hind legs, kept its balance with its tail stretched out behind it, and swayed its slightly large head from side to side as it approached.
The white-scaled baby dragon stumbled a little as it approached and then yawned widely. It then crashed into Ulca’s large chest. Ulca looked down at the baby dragon in her arms with a bewildered expression.
“. . .Is it sleeping?”
“. . .I think so.”
The baby dragon fell asleep, breathing shallowly. Seeing its shrunken form, it was hard to believe that it was the same dragon that had just been breathing lightning at Fyumeronscan.
“How did Russell get the dragon egg?”
“My guess is that it has something to do with him killing the dragon in the city of Calisden. Maybe it asked him to take care of its child as it was dying.”
Hailyn spoke casually, yet her words unexpectedly struck the right chord.
Ulca nodded her head.
“That makes sense. Let’s get up for now. We need to go help Russell.”
“I understand.”
Ulca stood up, holding the dragon in her left arm. The muscles in her legs and abdomen, which had just finished regenerating, trembled. Her right hand wouldn’t clench properly either. Even so, Ulca didn’t lose her determination.
Hailyn was the same. Even with his armor broken, his shield dented, and his bones broken, he was a paladin who worshipped the sun. He could easily disregard the wounds on his body for the sake of his comrade, who was facing the devil alone.
“For now, we can’t take this baby dragon with us. Let’s leave it next to Jess.”
Just as Ulca limped over to put the baby dragon next to the unconscious Jess, a tremendous roar erupted from the cave where Herokeinin and Russell had disappeared.
The entrance to the cave cracked and then collapsed with a roar. Hailyn gasped and Ulca screamed.
“No!”
As Ulca tried to force herself to run, the overworked muscles in her legs tore, causing her excruciating pain. Ulca, who had fallen to the ground against her will, felt the vibrations running through the floor. She raised her head.
Thud, thud, thud.
The cave trembled. Then, the rubble-blocking cave entrance exploded. Rocks and stones scattered into the air. And from the collapsing cave, two dark masses soared into the air.
🔷🔷🔷🔷🔷🔷
The devil and Russell collided and fell repeatedly. Each time, the cave echoed, and the floor and walls collapsed.
Logos, a black-skinned giant, wasn’t just a giant. On his back, he spread out wings of black bone, and from his back, he extended four long, barbed tails and flew them at Russell.
Russell swung his greatsword and axe relentlessly, blocking the descending claws of the wings, dodging the tails that swept the floor, and deflecting the blade of the scythe that thrust at him from the front.
Bang!
Russell, who couldn’t block the two barbed tails that flew at his side with a loud noise, rolled on the cave floor and then stood up.
The magical armor that Ludwig had given him, Bael, had a small dent. Considering that it had been unharmed when it was crushed by the huge body of the dragon Ismenios, Logos’s physical strength and power surpassed that of the dragon.
━You’ve lasted this long for a mere human. What is your name?
“Russell.”
Logos tilted his faceless face. Even so, his voice continued to rumble and echo in the void.
━Quite a decent body you have. Better than this wretched body.
Russell didn’t respond. He seemed to think that simply giving his name was enough.
Was it his defiance that angered him further? Logos closed the distance with more intense movements than before, then swung his scythe. Russell’s greatsword, Nahilnir, suddenly let go of the hilt as it met it.
Russell’s one-handed battle axe, Final Frost, which he had held with both hands, struck Logos, who had lost his balance as he lunged forward.
Boom!
Russell threw Logos backwards as if a baseball bat had struck him, then kicked Nahilnir, who had fallen to the floor, into the air with his toes before slamming it into the floor.
━Insolent human!
Logos, who had exploded in anger, changed his posture in mid-air. His wings, made of bone, spread wide, and two of the four barbed tails pierced the floor, acting as brakes. The remaining two tails rose up like tentacles, with sharp thorns at each joint.
“Hah!”
With Russell’s battle cry, the white axe spun rapidly and flew towards Logos at an incredible speed. The devil reflexively raised his scythe to block the axe, causing Russell’s stored magic to transform into frost and cold, bursting forth with a fearsome force.
Kwaaah━! With the sound of a waterfall, Logos’s torso froze solid. Just as Logos, trapped in a block of ice, was about to split in two from the top of his head, a green flame erupted like a volcano.
Kwang━!
The flames that blocked Russell’s Nahilnir exploded with a deafening noise, as if they had physical substance. No, the flames actually had physical force and flickered. The floor couldn’t withstand the explosion and collapsed inward into a hemisphere.
The momentary near-death experience had caused the devil to expend his remaining magic to create a flame like his own, and Logos felt an unbearable rage.
━Me, to a mere human!
As the devil, consumed by rage, poured out his magic without restraint, the cave trembled. The once-holy corners vanished from sight. The sound of the cave entrance collapsing under the vibrations and the torrent of magic echoed in the distance.
━Kuaaaah!
Engulfed in flames all over his body, Logos flew over and attacked Russell. The devil and Russell became one mass and charged across the cave, towards the one path that led to the cave entrance.
Bouncing like an elastic ball off the cave’s ceiling, floor, and walls of the cave, the two exchanged punches and sword strikes. As many scars appeared on Logos’s tough, black skin, Russell’s armor also became dented in several places.
The two beings shattered the blocked cave entrance and fell outside. Ulca and Hailyn were shocked when they finally found Russell and the devil.
“Russell!”
“Russell-nim!”
Their screams faded into the distance. Logos was still flying, and Russell was holding onto the devil’s leg.
Logos quickly spread his bone wings and soared into the sky. Green flames followed him like a comet’s tail.
The sky was still filled with dark clouds, and the sun was setting, making the surroundings dim. In the distance, they could see the winding path of the canyon they had passed through, the forest filled with black trees, and the village of Logos. Russell made up his mind to ask if he could change the name of the village when he returned later.
Gazing down at the dizzying canyon, he realized that ascending further would ultimately result in his impalement. So Russell swung his greatsword and cut off one of Logos’s bone wings. The bone wing burned with silver flames and disappeared without leaving a single trace of ash.
━Kaaak!
The loss of one of his wings significantly reduced Logos’s speed. The devil kicked Russell’s face and torso with his uninjured foot.
━Let go! I said, Let go!
The powerful impact that went through his armor caused bruises and caused his mouth to burst, and he tasted the bitter taste of blood. ‘This bastard.’
Russell stubbornly refused to let go of Logos’s leg.
Then, four barbed tails raised their heads like snakes and shot out faster than arrows. With his greatsword, Russell cut off two of the barbed tails and summoned his axe with one hand. At that moment, the devil’s two eyes flashed.
━That won’t do!
The axe, which had just begun to take shape, clanged away and fell to the ground. When Russell tried to summon the axe again, it didn’t catch. ‘Damn, he’s got all kinds of tricks.’
However, Logos’s magic spell gave him a little bit of an opening. Russell didn’t miss the gap.
━Kuaaaah-!
Logos screamed. This time, it was definitely a scream of pain. It was different from the anger and surprise of before. With a trembling hand, the devil grabbed the great sword that had pierced his stomach. But just holding the blade burned his palm.
The moonlight rune, cutting open Logos’s stomach and preventing regeneration.
The moon’s power spreading throughout his body reminded the devil of a long-forgotten memory. The battle with the goddess of the moon took place thousands of years ago.
Because of that, the goddess of the moon had left the earth, but he himself had also suffered extensive damage to his entire body. It took hundreds of years for his shattered pieces to gather like dust and for his original consciousness to regain his senses, and it took another hundreds of years for him to be able to dominate humans.
The devil recalled that fierce memory.
━No, not twice!
However, unlike his screams, Logos’s violently gushing flames were subsiding. The devil began to fall, and so did Russell, who was hanging on to him.
They continued to fight as they fell. In the air, where there was no place to stand, Russell created a shockwave to gain momentum and struck Logos.
He grabbed Logos’s neck with his left hand and punched his head relentlessly with his right fist.
Logos deftly maneuvered two barbed tails, extracting the Nahilnir from his stomach and hurling it onto the ground. At the same time, the claws of his one remaining bone wing struck Russell.
The sudden strike caused Russell to spin around and fall away, but he quickly regained his posture in the air and attacked the devil again. Even at that point, the ground was getting closer and closer.
Ulca and Hailyn hurriedly moved their bodies as the two beings, who had been climbing high, began to fall. They judged that both the devil and Russell would be unsafe if they fell from such a height.
“Ugh!”
“Huff!”
Ulca and Hailyn fell to the floor. They had already suffered a lot of injuries in the battle. They tried to get up again, pushing their bodies, when Logos and Russell fell into the canyon.
However, there was no sound of impact. It was because the devil’s entire body suddenly turned into a black fog.
The black fog reduced both gravity and acceleration, and it gathered around a single point. Russell was the centerpiece.
The fog spread as fast as it had spread, swirling at an incredible speed, becoming a large sphere with a diameter of 5 meters.
Ulca and Hailyn stared at the black sphere with wide eyes.
🔷🔷🔷🔷🔷🔷
Logos swallowed his humiliation. For a great devil like himself, who had been able to compete with the goddess, to have failed to defeat a mere human was nothing short of humiliating.
His foolish servant had alerted the church too early, leading to his pursuit by two paladins. He had barely recovered with the help of the human souls and emotions that his servant had collected from several villages, but another variable had appeared.
This individual is truly exceptional. Because of this human, all his plans had gone awry.
That was also why he shattered his own body and created this black space the moment he fell into the canyon. Had he fallen in the same manner, he would have not only inflicted significant damage on the black-haired human, but also shattered himself into pieces.
Logos, who had looked outside through his servant’s eyes, knew that the moon’s wolf and the sun’s paladin were still alive. Had he been in such a shattered state, divine power would have undoubtedly struck him, potentially leading to his disappearance. After his revival, Logos couldn’t have perished so quickly.
So Logos created a non-material space with his remaining magic. In this space alone, no physical attack would work. The trapped black-haired human experienced the same fate.
━No, it’s even better. Now that body will be mine.
Logos’s consciousness approached the human, who was floating silently in the middle of black space. This human’s body was amazing, seeing him through his servant’s eyes and fighting him directly.
His stamina, strength, and inherent magic power were all of the highest quality that the devil had ever seen in the world.
His armor, greatsword, and axe were also unusual weapons. If he can take over and corrupt that body, it could become a truly world-shaking demonic weapon.
The formless logos soon gathered right in front of Russell’s face. In the darkness, a dark mass began to ripple with increasing intensity. He was on the verge of penetrating Russell’s eyes, nose, and mouth.
Russell’s eyes suddenly opened. Logos was shocked. ‘How? Humans shouldn’t be able to regain consciousness.’
However, there were no pupils in the open eyes. Inside them was another abyss. There was a starry universe, as well as a void in which nothing existed. There was an outside.
Logos felt as though his non-existent eyes were wide open.
━How can you. . .?!
Black eyes stared directly at Logos. And then everything shattered.
🔷🔷🔷🔷🔷🔷
Ulca picked up Russell’s sword, Nahilnir, which had fallen to the floor. The great sword was heavy. However, the moonlight runes carved on the blade recognized her and gave her strength.
“Move. Let me start with this.”
“Can’t I help?”
“Just move.”
Ulca, who was walking unsteadily, raised the great sword high, aiming at the black sphere.
Her lips were tightly pursed. ‘Don’t die. Don’t die.’
Just as she was about to swing down the greatsword.
With a click, the black sphere shattered. From within, a black figure flew out like a bullet and crashed to the ground. It was the devil, Logos, who was much smaller than before.
Russell walked out of the crumbling black sphere, his shoulders spinning around. His eyes burned fiercely with a purple color. The armor that had covered his entire body changed back into a coat at his will.
Ulca and Hailyn’s faces brightened at the sight of Russell, who was unharmed.
“Russell!”
Russell nodded slightly and approached Logos, who was lying face down. The sound of death’s footsteps approaching, thud, thud, thud, caused the devil to tremble and lift his face.
━K, haaaah.
Logos was covered in wounds. His bone wings were all torn off, and the spiky tails on his back were all shattered. One of his legs was gone, and the green flames that had flickered on top of his head were now no more than a candlelight.
But the devil’s eyes were the most surprising. Like his servant, Herokeinin, Logos’s eye sockets were now empty. Logos muttered, fumbling for the invisible floor.
━How, how. Are your eyes filled with the void? Are you a human. . .?
Russell stood right in front of the devil, who was supporting himself with his hands on the floor. He reached out his hand.
“Ulca. Sword.”
“Huh? Oh, h, here.”
Ulca handed him Nahilnir. Russell gripped Nahilnir with both hands and raised it high. The dark blade glinted black under the gray sky. The devil cried out desperately.
━Tell me! Why is it that a being like you. . .!
“I don’t know. Go ask in the afterlife.”
‘I don’t know if there’s anyone who can answer.’
Russell brought down the greatsword. Logos’s neck was cut off silently and rolled on the floor. Russell’s foot rested on Logos’s head, which was etched with an expression of disbelief.
Thwack!
