Chapter 65.2: A Journey for Spring (1)
“Thanks to this guy, I had to stay in bed for a whole extra day, so why are you here?”
In the battle against Ballam, Cain had to use all his strength.
But because of the wizard who showed up late, he had to swing his sword again like squeezing water out of a dried squid.
The fact that things had gone this far was largely due to that man.
At Cain’s barbed words, the middle-aged man bowed his head slightly and introduced himself.
“I’m sorry, I’m Digrid Wareham. Like my friend here, I am a count. I am also a member of the Tower of Magic.”
Count Garick added.
“Digrid has been like this since he was young, but I have heard that he offended you after you got involved with his daughter. I apologize on his behalf.”
Considering that Cain was the Lord of Ethelred, three out of the five counts in Airian were currently gathered in this room.
‘It’s not too late to get angry, but this situation is only temporary.’
Cain barely managed to raise his body and looked at Count Garick Crowl and Count Digrid Wareham with one eye.
It is said that there are as many classifications of wizards as there are wizards, but Cain divided them into two main categories.
Those who shut themselves in their rooms and thoroughly study the discipline of magic.
The second is the practical school.
Those who efficiently utilize the magic that has been researched and can fight alongside you at any time.
‘He’s a typical practical wizard. Even on the continent, his reflexes are considered to be top-notch.’
Having fought alongside many mages, Kane was able to estimate Digrid’s abilities based solely on the magic he had seen before he collapsed.
The fact that such a wizard was the master of the magic tower in Airian was news to Cain, even as a regressor.
‘He’s not an ordinary count under Marquis McLoud.’
As the Kingdom of Airian was born out of swords and blood, its aristocratic system also retains elements that take into account war.
This is especially true of the relationship between marquises and counts.
This is because, as a nation that is always considering war with the Northern Elf Forest, it has a tendency to prepare for emergencies.
The territories of the two marquises border the Northern Elf Forest, and if trouble arises, the counts were to immediately follow the orders of the marquises and proceed with the battle.
Marquis Ross of the Eastern Front has command over Ethelred, Lamaring, and Crowl.
Marquis McLoud of the Western Front could wield command over Wareham and Bradley in times of war.
‘But there hasn’t been an elf war since the founding of Airian.’
Although it was said that the human expeditions to the north to seize the northern forest had repeatedly failed, they had always succeeded in the political sense of reducing the power of the elves.
As the border had been fixed for such a long time, the aristocratic system that had been prepared for war at the time of the founding of the nation had gradually transformed into an ordinary aristocratic system.
Cain scratched the end of his eyebrow with his index finger and asked.
“I have never met you before, but I will defer to you since Lord Count Garick says so.”
“Whew━.”
“However, I don’t understand why a man of your stature would suddenly appear alone in Qaclington.”
Garick and Digrid seemed to have already talked.
The two of them turned their heads and exchanged glances to decide who would speak first, and Garick spoke first.
“First of all, the reason why he appeared in Qaclington is because if you draw a straight line from the royal capital to here, you’ll pass through there.”
Count Digrid specialized in wind magic.
In that case, it wouldn’t be difficult for him to fly from the royal capital to Crowl.
Cain looked back at Digrid and said softly.
“Then you must have seen Ballam.”
It would be strange not to see him at that size. Cain asked bluntly.
“As expected, that was the devil Ballam!”
Digrid exclaimed, jumping up from the sofa.
He seemed to know a thing or two about it, as it was a wizard who studied demons as a discipline.
He exclaimed excitedly.
“Lava Devil Ballam! How did such a high-ranking devil come to be in Airian? How did you awaken Ballam?”
Then, with his eyes sparkling, he walked over briskly.
Count Garick shook his head vigorously behind him.
Cain spread his palms to stop the other man from approaching.
“I don’t think we’re close enough to be talking like this.”
Count Digrid tilted his head.
“Why not? If you’re Edmund’s son, you’re my nephew.”
“Because the moment you saw your nephew, you tried to kill him.”
“…….”
Digrid hung his head with a hurt expression.
No matter how crazy he was, his actions were rude, to say the least.
If Cain hadn’t been strong, he would have been in a situation where he would have killed his nephew the moment he saw him.
Cain chuckled to himself at his sullen expression.
‘Whether it’s in a good way or a bad way, he’s like a child.’
He was used to it, as there were quite a few such people among wizards.
Maybe it was because they had only been active in academies or magic towers since they were young, but most of them had a childlike side to them for their age.
“And there’s something more important than Ballam.”
“……?”
Cain’s eyes sharpened.
Despite having just regained consciousness, a cold air enveloped the room.
Count Garick, who had fought Cain once, instinctively clenched and unclenched his fists.
Cain pointed at Garick.
“I heard you’re friends with Lord Count Garick.”
“That’s right.”
“However, considering that you didn’t know that Lord Count Garick had been manipulated by Arian for several years, you haven’t been in touch with each other during that time.”
“……I’m ashamed to admit it, but that’s true.”
They might have been friends as children.
However, once they grew up and each became a count, it became difficult to communicate.
As far as Cain knew, it was very rare for the counts to meet face to face except for regular meetings.
“I think you should be the first to tell me why you flew straight from the royal capital when you don’t usually stay in touch.”
“What if it’s none of your business?”
“If it were none of my business, you wouldn’t have come here so urgently.”
Count Digrid stared blankly at Cain before laughing heartily.
It was a smile that he seemed to like quite a bit.
“You look like Edmund, but your insides are just like Hybolt when he was a child. I like it even more. You’re my guy, just like Garick said.”
“So you say.”
Count Garick gave him a thumbs-up from behind.
Digrid gave him a thumbs-up in return and said to Cain.
“Do you have any thoughts about becoming a duke?”
Cain frowned and pointed at himself, and Digrid nodded with a broad smile.
