A suppressed shriek is swallowed down just as it’s about to escape from my throat.

Even if I attempt a swift about-face to escape, I’m unable to move quickly due to the massive amount of linen I’m carrying.

“That linen seems heavy. Let me help you carry it.”

Before he even hears my response, Lord Montyver takes the linen from me.

“No, it’s alright. I can manage this much.”

“What about the maid?”

Today is the servants’ day off. There’s no one else in the mansion.

“You’re the Marchioness’ attendant, aren’t you? An attendant is someone who works as an extension of their master. Would the Marchioness be carrying linen around?”

As he says, this is the attendant’s job, and I’m left without a response to his logical sound.

Unable to reclaim the linen, all I could do was to follow him.

“Which way to the linen room again?”

“This way.”

Even when I try to walk ahead, Lord Montyver keeps aligning himself by my side for some reason.

With a bit of awkwardness, I led him to the linen room.

“And here we are!”

In the sun-drenched linen room, Lord Montyver stretches.

“Ah, the linen room smells so good! I love it.”

“I feel the same way.”

The freshly washed, clean linen, which has soaked up plenty of sunshine, smells great.

Back before time rewound, I was worked to the bone by my uncle’s family, but I always loved caring for the linen.

“I’d love to be buried under linen at the end of my life.”

“Please don’t say such frightening things.”

“Ah, sorry, sorry.”

Even though the mood was warm and cozy, Lord Montyver’s words brought me back to reality.

I straighten my back and turn around.

“I will guide you to the Marchioness.”

“Alright, thank you.”

Today, the Marquis has invited Florenci to the study to help with his studies.

The Marchioness is a cultured individual, and apparently, she can even explain the mathematical equations Florenci doesn’t understand.

“So, the Marchioness is teaching your son in the study?”

“Yes.”

“She’s changed a lot in just ten days.”

At first, the Marchioness was merely fond of Florenci, but recently, she started showing her strict side.

Not only in his studies, but she also instructs him in manners and etiquette, and Florenci is growing every day.

Florenci needs an adult role model other than me, and for that, I am very grateful.

“He’s planning to go to the museum with the Marchioness soon, and he seems to be studying harder than usual.”

“Really? . . . . . .I’m surprised. The Marchioness has regained enough energy and vitality to go out.”

It’s been three years since she lost her beloved granddaughter, Irma, and it seems the Marchioness’ time had stopped.

She lived each day quietly, as if dead, with no energy for anything, not letting anyone close, not going anywhere.

“I used to think of the Marchioness as an old tree in the conservatory. I was worried that if I didn’t water it, it would wither.”

He’s not just a frivolous, noisy man. He must have been visiting the Marquis’s residence as a ‘tea-drinking friend’ out of concern for the Marchioness.

“The reason why the Marchioness has recovered this much is thanks to you, Lara.”

“No, it’s not me, it’s Ren. . . . . .Perhaps the existence of my son gave the Marchioness the energy.”

“That’s not true. It’s due to you, who insisted on working for the Marchioness. It’s your achievement that you didn’t take my hand at that time. It’s a testament to your stubbornness.”

When he puts it like that, it makes me seem like an intractable stubborn person. Well, I’ll accept it as a compliment.

As we were talking, we arrived at the study.

As soon as I knocked on the door, Florenci’s lively voice of “Come in!” came back in response.

“Okaa-san――Oh!!”

Florenci probably wasn’t expecting Lord Montyver to be there. He looks up at him with wide eyes.

Upon this, Lord Montyver instantly crouched down on one knee.

Introducing himself at the same eye level as Florenci, he said, “Nice to meet you. I am Leon・Montyver.”

“Are you Lara’s son?”

“Y, Yes. I am Ren・Dosa.”

Florenci’s surprise was momentary, he soon reciprocated the greeting.

Seeing this, Lord Montyver stood up, instantly lifting him off the ground.

“There we go — Good boy.”

Just like one would with a young child, Lord Montyver picked up Florenci, grinning.

One would think such an action might scare him, however, Florenci was laughing joyfully.

It seemed that he had never experienced something like this before, so while surprised, he was also enjoying it.

Even I had to admit, I couldn’t lift the now six-year-old Florenci that high. In this regard, I had to concede defeat.

“Leon, please, don’t lift Ren like a small child.”

“He is a small child.”

“He’s in the middle of his gentleman’s education.”

Upon receiving the sparkling gaze from the Marchioness, Lord Montyver gently set down Florenci.

Crouching down again, he whispered into Florenci’s ear, “I’ll do it again later.”

Seeing Florenci nod happily, Lord Montyver thought to himself that he indeed was a necessary adult for my younger brother.
