Chapter 8: End of the Irritation
“Haru, there’s no doubt that magical power is emanating from the goddess statue, right?”
“Absolutely.”
Victor-san was lost in thought with a composed expression, but he obtained permission from Modal-san to move the goddess statue. Now, the three of us, including me, are in the backyard.
“Well then, I’ll move it.”
Victor-san lifted the goddess statue with both hands. Huh? Aren’t you supposed to move it with magic? Just as I thought that, it was as if Victor-san heard the voice in my mind, and he turned around to explain.
“In the past, I could move it without saying anything. But now, I can’t produce as much magical power as before.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“Your face speaks volumes.”
“How rude.”
We’re using casual language. While it is allowed as a request from Victor-san for the accommodation, Modal-san is nervous.
Victor-san moved the statue with both hands. There was a circular hole in the pedestal, and a flow of golden powder began to spill out from a low position.
“This statue has a hole from the soles of the feet to the back of the head. That’s why magical power from the earth comes out from the back of the head.”
“The person who came up with this must have been seeing golden powder. Hey, Victor-san. If you receive this golden powder on your body, wouldn’t it heal your burnt-out magic or something?”
“Huh? I’ve never thought about it, but why do you think that?”
“Well, when I bathe in the golden powder that comes out from here or the powder that comes out from your magic, my body feels warm and I feel good. So I thought if you tried it too, you might get good results.”
“Maybe it’s because Haru is a person from another world?”
“Hmm. If it makes you feel worse, you can just stop. It’s just a bonus if you become healthy and regain your summoner’s power, right?”
Victor-san’s brown eyes staring at me make me uneasy.
“What is it?”
“Are you hating me, Haru?”
“At first, I did.”
“Then why are you worried about me?”
I know my own personality.
“It’s because I’ve always been meddlesome. I can’t ignore people who are in trouble or weakened. It’s just self-satisfaction.”
Still, Victor-san keeps looking at my face.
“Just bring a chair here and read a book while bathing in the golden powder. It’s worth trying for a few days, I think.”
“O-Okay.”
Oh, Victor-san obediently listened to what I said.
“By the way, Victor-san, how old are you?”
“I’m twenty-three, but why does that matter?”
“Twenty-three…the same age as my younger brother. I thought you were older because you always act so high and mighty.”
“Younger brother?”
“From now on, you can call me Haru-neesan.”
“W-Who would say such a thing!”
Victor-san turned his face away, blushing. He has a cute side too.
“Ahem.”
Oh no, I forgot. Modal-san was here too.
“Well, I should get back to work now. When you’re done with the statue, please return it to its original state.”
He winked as he left.
“Wait a moment. I’ll bring a chair.”
I asked Claire-san if it was okay to use the chairs stored in the storeroom, then brought one to the backyard. Victor-san was crouching down, staring at the hole in the pedestal.
“I brought the chair. You see, the gold dust rises from that hole up to about knee height and then gently falls around. I think it would be more convenient to have the statue in place to receive the gold dust.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes.”
As I tried to put the statue back on the pedestal, Victor-san hurriedly tried to do it himself. Our fingertips touched, and it felt a bit awkward.
“I’ll do it.”
“Yeah. Thank you.”
When I placed the statue, the gold dust passed through the inside of the statue and spewed out from the back of its head. It floated gently in the air before slowly descending. I placed the chair and had Victor-san sit down. The gold dust danced around his shoulders, back, and waist before disappearing.
“Yeah. It feels good as it dances around my body. Even if you think it’s a trick, give it a try. Shall I bring a book or some tea?”
“Could I have some tea, please? Sorry, Haru, you were supposed to have a day off, right?”
“It’s fine. There will be another day off.”
I called out Miles-san to cook something, and borrowed an empty wooden box. I also made some tea. I used a handkerchief as a makeshift tablecloth on the wooden box and placed the tea cups on it.
“So, about what we were talking about earlier.”
“Yeah? What are you referring to?”
“I don’t hate you. You were just doing your job. And you gave it your all, but everything was erased, right? I want you to feel better.”
Victor-san had a puzzled expression.
“As long as you’re trapped in the past, you won’t be able to move forward. That’s why I’ve decided to stop being angry about being summoned to this world. Victor-san, I’m sure you’ve had many things that made you angry, but if possible, try to forget them and take care of yourself.”
My thoughts are my own. Whether he accepts them or not, it’s Victor-san’s freedom.
Now, back to work. I have to clean every corner of the guest rooms. I distanced myself from Victor-san, who was covered in gold dust, and returned to work.
