Chapter 51: The Descent of the Saint
Evening.
The bustling streets of the ancient capital Heartfield were finally starting to empty out. However, a group at the entrance of the forest was frozen in fear, blocking the path for those coming from behind. As a result, tens of thousands of people crowded the streets heading towards the forest.
I stood in the center of the square, dressed in a white dress, while Victor stood at the edge of the square.
On the narrow roads surrounding the square, many people were waiting with tired faces for the person in front of them to move forward.
❂❂❂❂❂❂
Victor called out in a loud voice, and I responded in kind.
“Alright, let’s deploy the magic circle.”
“Yeah, let’s do our best!”
“Okay.”
Victor raised both hands towards the sky and closed his eyes. The magical power needed to construct the enormous magic circle had been sufficiently accumulated. Almost every day since he met me, whether in the backyard of the Aura Inn or Cyril’s house, or in the small plaza of Deals, he had been bathed in magical power. I diligently encouraged Victor to bathe in the golden powder. Perhaps, it was for this moment.
Soon, the air began to vibrate with a loud buzzing sound, and a large white magic circle emerged in the darkening sky above the city.
It continued to rise and grow in size, eventually settling in a position that concealed the identical cloud between the golden cloud and the ground. It came to a halt, motionless.
The surrounding crowd stopped moving and stared at the magic circle. After a while,
Crack!
A thick beam of light descended from the golden cloud. It fell from the edge of the cloud but was guided to flow down towards the center of the magic circle, falling vertically towards me through the central hole.
“Wow!”
The crowd let out a collective scream, but nothing happened.
No, to be precise, the concentrated mass of magical power was falling towards me as I stood in the center of the square.
The white light passed through me from head to toe, illuminating the ground of the square, and returned to the earth.
The wind rustled my white attire. I was still standing.
The excited voices of the people reached me.
“Did the light not fall on that girl?”
“It fell. It fell directly.”
“Is she unharmed?”
“Yeah, she’s fine. She’s smiling at the man.”
The people who had been crouching stood up and looked at me in the center of the square. From the entire surrounding area, voices saying “Saint-sama?” and “It’s Saint-sama!” began to rise, eventually turning into a wave-like cry of “Wow! Saint-sama is here!” that spread among the people.
Since many people were rushing towards me, I raised my hand to stop them.
“Don’t come! The magical power is still descending! Everyone, please move away! Stay away from here!”
Upon hearing that, the people who had tried to rush towards me stopped and, while glancing back at me, reorganized themselves into a shuffled line and moved forward.
“Haru, it’s coming!”
“Understood!”
Victor, who was maintaining the magic circle with his magical power, should not have forgotten Pauline-san’s foresight. She had said, “The magical power will descend three times in a row.” Victor was looking at the cloud with both hands raised.
After a while, once again, crack! crack! Two consecutive flashes of golden light appeared. The released magical power, like the first time, was guided to the center of the magic circle and fell upon me.
Once again, the ground beneath my feet shone brightly, absorbing the fallen magical power.
After witnessing that, my strength left me, and I collapsed to the ground.
“Haru!”
Victor rushed over, and the magic circle in the sky disappeared with a whoosh.
“Are you okay?”
“I think so.”
“Are you injured anywhere?”
“My arms, they feel hot.”
Victor hastily rolled up the sleeves of my white dress. Both Victor and I gasped simultaneously.
“Hey, Victor, what is this…?”
Delicate golden patterns that glowed adorned my arms from the elbows to the fingertips. They resembled overgrown vine plants, with buds depicted here and there. When Victor touched the patterns, his fingers felt cold and pleasant, just like when I got burned.
“Maybe it’s a burn because it’s hot.”
“I’ll cool it down now, wait!”
Saying that, Victor fetched water from the well at the corner of the square and soaked his shirt in it. He then ran back and placed it on my arms.
“Phew. It’s cool and feels good.”
“Is there anywhere else? Are you feeling any pain?”
“I’m fine.”
Just after I laughed, I began to feel faint.
“Haru! Haru!”
I could hear Victor shouting in my ear, but my consciousness slowly descended into darkness.
