Chapter 5: Unexpected Reunion
“Oh, so you were here!”
I was suddenly grabbed by the shoulder from the side. I was scared and froze, but when I saw the person’s face, I was surprised. It was the wizard who summoned me.
“Um, if I remember correctly, you’re Victor-san?”
“I’ve been searching for you. Why did you leave the castle?”
“Huh?”
What is this person talking about. . .
Noticing that people around us were paying attention, Victor-san said, “Please come this way.” and quickly walked ahead.
As he tried to enter a fancy restaurant, I resisted at the entrance.
“I have no business with you, and I have no money. So I won’t enter this restaurant.”
Victor-san looked at my face with his brown eyes.
“What’s the matter?”
“If it’s about money, I have some. I won’t do anything violent. I have to talk to Saint-sama. Anyway, it’s bothersome to argue in front of the shop, so please come inside.”
Reluctantly, I sat down in a corner seat as I was told. Ordered two cups of tea, and Victor-san let out a sigh.
The young wizard had brown eyes and long, silky brown hair. His hair was tied back, and he was wearing a shirt, jacket, and pants instead of the robe he wore at the castle. And he seemed much thinner than when I first saw him.
“I heard from the Prime Minister that you left while I was bedridden. Why did you do such a thing?”
“No, it’s completely the opposite. I was told to leave. So I left the castle just as I was. And I’m Haru. If you’re going to call me Saint-sama, I’ll leave right now. Please don’t use honorifics.”
“Ah, well then, Haru. Just as you were? That’s. . . terrible. What have you been doing all this time?”
“I’ve been living thanks to kind people. I’ve met kind people. I don’t want to tell you the details. Do you even understand what you’ve done? What you did was a nationwide kidnapping.”
“. . .”
“I was living a relatively happy life in my world. My sudden disappearance must have worried my family and friends. They might be grieving, thinking I got involved in a crime. After realizing that I was useless, you abandoned me alone in a foreign country without even giving me temporary money.”
“I’m truly sorry for everything. If there’s anything I can do, I’ll make it up to you with all my might. But my summoning magic was successful. Haru should undoubtedly save this country from the disaster.”
“Saving the country, huh? Shouldn’t you try to solve things on your own first? Anyway, please leave me alone. Your apologies are unnecessary. Well then, thank you for the tea. Goodbye.”
I desperately tried to appear calm. I didn’t want to shout or lose control.
“Wait!”
It seems that Victor-san tried to stand up and chase after me. However, he swayed and ended up kneeling on the floor.
“Are you okay, sir?”
The staff of the shop rushed over. Even the customers at the other tables widened their eyes and looked at us.
“Um, Victor-san? What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
“…I’m fine.”
He muttered only that and fell silent. If I just ignore it and leave, I’ll become just like those important people in this country who only care about themselves, huh?
Reluctantly, I lent a hand to Victor-san and helped him sit in a chair, then returned to my seat.
“Are you eating properly? You’ve lost quite a bit of weight, haven’t you?”
“Eating? Since the incident, I haven’t had any appetite. Even though I successfully performed a summoning that happens only once in a lifetime, it was treated as if it never happened.”
“Wait. Treated as if it never happened? After summoning me?”
“Yes. It seems that it cannot be said that the summoning ritual performed under the orders of His Majesty the King failed. Even though I’m saying it wasn’t a failure.”
“Ugh. How despicable can these people be? And what about you? After using a once-in-a-lifetime summoning, damaging your body, you haven’t been fired from your position in the castle, right?”
Victor-san smiled faintly with a dark expression.
“I haven’t been fired. Because I am officially recorded as having retired from the Royal Palace’s Wizard Corps due to illness. The records have been altered. That’s why it’s as if I never used the summoning ritual.”
Oh… this person is also a victim, you could say. If he was an employee, he couldn’t help but obey his superiors’ orders.
“Um, I’m just asking out of curiosity, but do you really have money? Do you have a stable foundation for your life?”
If it’s about a man’s pride, I’ll pay here. I have a decent workplace that guarantees my livelihood, after all.
Then Victor-san took out a leather bag from his pocket and placed it on the table. It made a heavy sound, “thud.”
“Take a look.”
I untied the bound string and peeked inside. It was filled with various sizes of gold coins, silver coins, and reddish copper coins.
“Oh, you really have money. That’s a relief. Then we should order something to eat. I’ll order. What do you feel like eating?”
My past upbringing of taking care of my two younger brothers unintentionally showed on my face. Whether it’s a virtue or a flaw, I tend to take care of people who are in trouble or weakened.
“Anything is fine.”
“There you go. Saying ‘anything is fine’ is what troubles people the most, you know? Well, I’ll order something random, so please eat without complaining about your preferences. Also, since it’s troublesome, can we speak in a normal tone?”
After a while, a soup with beans and potatoes and a sandwich with ham and eggs arrived.
“Take your time and eat little by little. Chew well, or your stomach will be surprised.”
Victor-san drank the soup wearily, but it seemed delicious. He scooped up some soup with a spoon and took a bite of the sandwich. Watching him, I felt a warm and gentle feeling, as if I had given food to a hungry large dog.
After finishing everything and rubbing his satisfied stomach, he looked straight at me and opened his mouth.
“A great disaster will surely come. The visionary has never been wrong. She is a genius. And my summoning was not a failure. I need your power. I want you to help me save this country.”
“…Are you still saying that? Did you really listen to what I said?”
Return the warm feeling to me, please.
