Chapter 164: Let’s Be a Hero a Little More (3)
Ol Keres Pendens’s Delete. A powerful spatial magic that completely erases the space around a target. Lucy once said it wasn’t the ultimate magic.
“How about now?”
“I can use about a day’s worth of magic from the Gray Forest.”
I should have felt uneasy rather than relieved.
How many times has Lucy actually dealt with Grenoian monsters using magic?
No, let’s stop joking around since we’re having a serious conversation. Well, the only magic he used today was to make the wind a little stronger to supply air.
Lucy, who was confidently shrugging his shoulders, suddenly made a serious expression as if he had remembered something.
“Risel, while we have time, I have something to ask.”
“What is it?”
“About my position in the Kingdom Army…… Is there a mandatory service period or something?”
“Huh? Hmm, well? Legally speaking, you’re not a soldier but have an honorary position within the military system because you’re employed by me. It’s the same for others. But why are you suddenly asking?”
I braced myself to respond calmly even if Lucy were to shout, “Then bring me a suitable title!” So, I ended up preparing for the wrong thing.
“No, I was thinking of visiting my master for a while after this Narvilt conquest. It’ll take a while.”
“Uh? Really? You’re free to do so…… but how long?”
“I can’t say for sure, but maybe about a year?”
A year? Hmm. That’s quite a while.
Ah, let me say this in advance, but if he wants to go, I have no intention of stopping him.
Although I need Lucy’s help, that’s just my situation. Lucy has his own circumstances. And personal matters are not something you can control.
But why a year?
“Did something happen to your master?”
“Ah, well. How should I put it? It’s something. I got a message while leading the legions to the Narvis Plain. It said there’s a possibility of realizing the most difficult legacy of Ol Keres Pendens in our school. That…… what was it? Observation of multiple space-time within a parallel dimension or something? Anyway, that’s it.”
I doubted the last sentence was even human language, but I could tell it was important as a mage. Lucy scratched his head and spoke with difficulty.
“Hmm, it’s a bit hard to explain now, but anyway, I’m also interested in that legacy. No, every mage in our school would go crazy for it. And lately, I’ve felt a strange stagnation in my magic, so I was looking for a breakthrough. Of course, I’m not the kind of person who easily breaks a promise with a friend. But that…… how should I say it? I can’t give up on my dreams either. Ah! Of course, if anything happens, I’ll jump through space and come running right away. I can swear on that.”
Even though it wasn’t a difficult problem at all, he was showing the appearance of someone asking me for a difficult favor due to moral qualms.
Seeing him like that, a gentle smile comes to me first.
Mages are people that ordinary people can’t understand. They are those who devote themselves to magic as their star, ultimate goal, and utopia.
Their sole purpose is to realize the end of magic.
To them, it’s like a natural phenomenon.
Like summer ending and autumn coming, leaves falling in autumn, sunflowers facing the sun, and me loving her.
Mages pursue magic.
And as it is anywhere, complaining and getting angry about something natural is foolish.
Of course, I’m not a fool.
“Alright. Go ahead.”
“Really? Is it okay?”
“Of course. And as for me, there’s no real loss. I won’t be able to receive the help I’ve been receiving while you’re away, but I’m a general now and my authority has increased considerably, so I’ll manage somehow. More than anything, how can I stop a friend from pursuing his dream? Choose a good day after the Narvilt conquest is over and go.”
Lucy beamed and grabbed my hand. He seemed genuinely happy.
“Thank you! Thank you so much! I’ll definitely repay this gratitude by becoming stronger! You can look forward to it!”
“It’s great that you’re getting stronger. There’s even less reason to stop you.”
Lucy, who seemed to be on the verge of tears with emotion, eventually clenched his fist and declared with determination.
“Alright! Then from today, I’ll do my best to make this Lucy a body you won’t forget!”
Uh, I’ll have to decline that.
Perhaps thinking it was a difficult request, Lucy quickly became motivated when I readily agreed. Thanks to that, the work time was considerably reduced, so it wasn’t bad.
The collapse point was determined considering the information brought by the search party and the terrain above ground. The participation of the enthusiastic mage was a great help in the calculations.
And so, the chosen location became the place I personally wanted to avoid the most. This could be considered a bit unfortunate.
Lucy, with a look full of enthusiasm, pointed his staff at the starting point of the collapse.
“Now! This Lucy! Will offer magic for his friend!”
4:20 PM. Looking at the mage burning with the heat of a furnace, I wondered if he was getting too hot and gave the signal.
“Begin!”
“Ushah! Big Fire―!”
The spell he had memorized flew towards the wall about 15 meters above ground. The giant fireball, along with a lightning bolt, is his favorite magic, and its destructive power is considerable.
But how much can fire scorch a stone?
Fire has no physical impact other than heat. That’s why I had received something from my benefactor that could deliver a physical impact.
Big Fire collided with ‘it’ and swallowed it whole in an instant.
An explosion, the likes of which I had never heard before in my life, erupted.
A tremendous roar echoed through the cavity, making me wonder if the whole place was going to collapse, and at the same time, brilliant light illuminated the area. It was the fireworks that remained in the legion.
If the fireworks craftsman who gave this to me saw this scene, he would probably want to turn me into fireworks and launch me into the sky.
The fireworks, ‘enhanced in explosive power to make the explosion sound travel as far as possible,’ instantly made a hole in the wall, and dirt started to fall from there.
“Next!”
Numerous water bottles flew towards the hole. It would have been nice if there was a pump, but unfortunately, it was hard to find. However, since we used water bottles made of a rather fragile material, the water was sufficiently seeping into the soil.
“Lucy!”
“Already prepared! Frozen Light!”
A blue light that seemed to chill me to the bone just by looking at it stretched out from Lucy’s hand and touched the soil soaked in water. Then the soil began to freeze white.
The soil froze instantly.
Crack! Crackle! Crack!
The sound of ice cracking echoed.
And I raised the bow I had placed at my feet and aimed at that spot. Since the area was frozen white with a diameter of almost 10 meters, there was no way I would miss from 150 meters away.
Pull the string, check the target, and hold your breath.
My trembling hand remained steady, and only the feeling of my pounding heart remained. I controlled my body, which twitched as if following the beating of my heart.
And then I heard the long-awaited sound.
“Risel, ready!”
There’s a saying passed down among archers.
You don’t shoot an arrow to hit the target, you shoot it because it will hit.
I decided to believe that saying.
As I released the string, the arrow silently cut through the air.
The arrowhead was blunt, and at the end was an explosive that detonates on impact, the kind used for children’s toys.
The arrow, which seemed to have disappeared into the shadows and been swallowed by the void, the next moment, hit the center of the white, frozen space.
Bang―!
The sound was simple, but the aftereffects of the impact were enormous. The cracking ice shattered in an instant.
Fragments of the frozen ground fell like a woman’s tears, like glass shards falling.
At that moment, the ground began a tremendous upheaval.
Rumble……!
It collapses. As the frozen soil lost its place, the ground, unable to bear the weight, began to collapse in earnest.
But it’s not enough yet!
“I’m not the main character. Lucy―!”
“Woohoo! My name is Kersilla Creon! The hammer that orchestrates time, the instrument that plays the future, the beast that leaps into the past! And the ruler of space who has realized the secrets of the beginning, the successor of Ol Keres Pendens! By the authority of my master! Ol Keres Pendens’s Delete! For my friend―!”
Distorted space, as if growling, leaped from the tip of his staff. The essence of spatial magic, containing only the will to destroy, directly struck the spot that was just about to collapse, and immediately afterward, emitted a resonant sound that shook the world.
Keeeiing―!
Like pulling the back of a canvas with a picture on it, the space began to retreat inward. Along with the space, all the elements of creation within it retreated together.
Lucy took a rough breath and leaned against his staff, and just as I was worried that his body might collapse, dirt began to pour out from the place where Delete had hit.
Thud. Thud! Plop……!
The amount of dirt that had been falling like mere drops of water gradually increased, and like dripping water turning into a trickle, a trickle into a stream, and then into a torrent.
The end of that colorful expansion was a raging tidal wave.
The dirt, stones, and rocks that came crashing down hit the ground, raising a tremendous amount of dust, and the procession seemed endless. Then, finally, a crack appeared near the wall of the hole.
With creaking and cracking sounds, rock dust, pebbles, and boulders fell from the rock, and finally, a part of the wall broke off, becoming an exploding tidal wave.
Since wet soil was falling, the thick dust that would have obscured our vision didn’t rise, but instead, a terrifying current, like a raging sea trying to swallow the land, threatened to engulf the ruins.
Lucy leaned on his staff and watched the process of the great work he had accomplished. His face held more anticipation than a sense of accomplishment.
“Good…… Like that! A little more! Yes…… Keep going!”
Why does he look more like a mage now than when he showed off Delete a while ago?
As if responding to his command, the soil continued to pour down endlessly. The anticipation on Lucy’s face grew even greater.
Finally, he heard the sound that satisfied his expectations.
Kaboom! Kaboom!
Although I couldn’t see it, I could guess what that sound was. It was the sound of the north gate of Narvis Fortress, which I had designated as the collapse point, crumbling.
The foundation stones would have collapsed first, and the top of the gate would be swaying like it was experiencing a terrible earthquake.
It would be a spectacular sight if you could actually see it.
The solidly built stone wall would tremble like a patient with a cold, and then, as its base caved in, the gate would slowly sink as if submerged in a swamp.
Eventually, when the collapse began to the point where the balance of the interlocking rocks was disrupted, a secondary collapse would begin, almost simultaneously with the first, due to the weight of the gate.
Some of the falling stones would crush the soil, and some would collide with those stones, sparking as they rolled down the sloping hole.
Just like when you pull out the bottom block of a stack of wooden blocks, the gate and part of the wall would cave inward and roll down.
The moment the weight was combined with speed, the self-destruction would become irreversible.
I saw the dirt-covered stones rolling down violently. I could see the surging dirt and stones pouring in through the huge black hole.
“Risel, what if the dome collapses?!”
“It’s okay! It won’t collapse that easily!”
I said it as if it were obvious in response to Lucy’s words. How do I know? Because the fortress was attacked in this way even before I died! Even then, the ruins didn’t collapse!
Come on, surge in. A little more. Show us the blue sky. Let us see the sky from inside the fortress!
Rumble! Rumble! Crash!
The rolling stones hit the floor of the fortress and collided with the fallen stones, creating a tremendous roar. The collapse must have been causing an earthquake, and it must be chaos up above.
After a long while of deafening roars that could make you deaf.
The collapse stopped.
Someone saw it.
“It’s light―!”
Bright sunlight was streaming into the underground, visible even from where I was. And leading to the light was a perfectly formed slope.
My face was filled with ecstasy. An uncontrollable shout surged within my chest.
I drew my sword and ran towards the light.
Feeling my blood boil, I commanded.
“All forces―! Charge!”
This time, you could say we were really lucky.
Even I, the planner, couldn’t have imagined that the hole we dug would be large enough for 60 soldiers per second to rush out.
Originally, I thought we might have to block the fortress troops at the exit with me, Levidian, Al, and Lucy while the other soldiers widened the hole, but there was no need for that.
Judging from the shape, it seemed like we had collapsed the north gate of the fortress. In fact, the north gate had collapsed, creating a path, so we could say we had breached the fortress walls.
From above, it would look like a swarm of ants pouring out of an anthill.
The fortress troops must have had to go all the way across the Sair River to pick up their composure after the sudden collapse of the gate, the unexpected appearance of the hole, and the sudden onslaught of the 8th Legion.
Just as they were switching to a formation to intercept the enemies that had entered the fortress, and just as the fortress troops were gritting their teeth and clenching their fists with determination. The Herduke 8th Legion had already occupied the central part of the fortress.
“I’m guessing, but this doesn’t seem like the command center.”
“I think so too, Lucy.”
