Fear by Number.
A biological catastrophe.
Could it be described by any other means?
“Requesting artillery, bombing! Detonate all the mines!”
“The number is too large . . . !”
Legion-class. A catastrophic creature capable of menacing an army corps or a continent.
The Cust pack, currently the only one considered to be Legion-class in the chimeraz collective, charged at the troops with the thunderous roar of its wingbeats.
From the sky, hot steel rain poured down as automatically set mines exploded in succession. Combat helicopters, drone fighters, and ground-attack aircraft added their firepower to the mix. The target was to stop the rampaging creatures with overwhelming firepower.
The explosions were so fierce, they piled up flesh instead of corpses. The Custs, however, kept charging as long as they were alive, even with their wings on fire and legs blown off.
“Grrrraaaaagh!!!”
Whether they aimed at them or not, they were hit. Humanoids were crushed by the Custs, which swarmed over them, and vanished from sight. Infantrymen in combat suits were either swallowed alive or torn apart by their clover-shaped snouts.
Multi-legged tanks maneuvered through the rugged terrain, crushing Custs and ceaselessly firing their cannons, but it wasn’t enough. War machines mobilized all their available weapons, but it wasn’t enough. Orbital bombardment and shelling from the rear landing site were not enough.
“What the hell is the fleet doing?!”
This wave was endless. It could only be stopped with a massive orbital bombardment that scorched the very ground, or by detonating several nuclear weapons.
“I don’t care if we lose a few; give the monsters a taste of nuclear shower!!”
“All missiles are being shot down! A, and 17 more Lemegetons have appeared and are scrambling chimeraz aircraft . . . !”
“Kreion and Elite packs have appeared on the eastern front! A small number of them have breached the defensive line and are attacking the fire support battalion!”
Behind the wave of rampaging Custs, something could be vaguely seen.
Hounz, Tritulas, and Kabanas, who hadn’t participated in the battle, were standing around absent-mindedly. Just thinking about the reason sent chills down their spines.
They were waiting.
For this side’s firepower, energy, lives, bullets, and shells to run out.
“Dammit . . . ! Fall back! Fall back!”
Kreion, who heard the voice via Cust, gave orders during the battle.
The sound of the earth collapsing and rising. Those among them who were facing the Cust pack, with their ears perked up, unconsciously turned their heads.
“. . . What the hell . . .”
Dozens of Skeletunnel’s crocodile-like jaws pierced through the ground behind them. When had they dug the tunnel? It was such a meticulous surprise attack that they hadn’t even detected the seismic waves underground.
As the Skeletunnels opened their jaws, chimeraz poured out of the empty, damp exoskeleton passage along with the tar-like Xenotera.
Countless Custs coming from the front, and all sorts of chimeraz from behind. There was no way to escape either way. Their retreat route had been cut off.
So, they suddenly looked up to the sky in search of hope and dimly saw huge Lemegetons engaging in a bizarre space battle with the allied ships.
The answer to why their fleet couldn’t provide strong support was up there in space.
“Fighting like that makes their firepower and shields meaningless . . .”
Who would’ve imagined it?
The Lemegetons, the chimeraz ships, were literally chewing on the Darwin Foundation ships.
In the process of being chewed, the chimeraz pack inside the Lemegetons must be turning the allied ships’ interiors into a mess.

Kreion was fighting and commanding at the same time.

A humanoid sniper targeting Kreion was shot down by the Elites.
Kreion extended his black wings forward, shielding himself.
At the same time, plasma buckshot aimed at Kreion blew up his wings. Gats immediately charged at the war machine that had fired the plasma buckshot.
“Yes! I hear you!”
Heavy tremors in the ground could be heard from beyond the high hill of corpses, 150m away.
Sensing the danger, Gats jumped back as ordered and stopped in front of Kreion.
“Never seen a multi-legged tank of that kind.”
The source of the tremors was a quadrupedal tank. It was about 20 meters tall and must have weighed over a thousand tons.
“I thought it was some kind of anti-aircraft structure . . .”
The huge multi-legged tank announced its judgment to its enemies in an intimidating mechanical voice.
“Target acquired. Preparing Carmine System.”
An incredibly thick barrel was aimed at Kreion. It was huge, as if a ship cannon had been removed attach to it as it was.
“Target locked. Activating Carmine System.”
As the muzzle flashed, the surrounding air rippled. Kreion had an immediate intuition.
Kreion dodged to the side to avoid the muzzle aimed at him. However, the muzzle slowly turned, following Kreion. It was a system that could track the target even after deciding to fire. It was a do-or-die situation.
