Chapter 17: Disaster Avoidance Meeting (Part 6)
“Oliver and the heroine will meet at Plum Lake, a summer resort, ten days from now. The heroine lost a ring that her mother gave her somewhere in Plum. Oliver offers to help her find it. Then the two spend several days together until the ring is found and become close.”
“Wow. . .That sounds like the kind of meeting you’d find in a romance novel.”
“I prefer something more romantic. For example. . .”
“That’s enough of that!”
Chloe hurriedly covers Steed’s mouth.
She absolutely does not want to hear any more creepy metaphors.
Even the story of the heroine’s meeting made her feel uneasy, and she doesn’t want to hear any more sparkling love stories.
Despite being forcibly stopped, Steed is smiling happily.
“It’s rare for Chloe to touch me first.”
“Huh! D-Don’t say it like that!”
Chloe quickly releases Steed and backs away.
Steed’s smile doesn’t fade at all.
It’s very awkward.
“So, how are you going to prevent the two from meeting?”
“We know the place and date, so we’ll go ahead and stop Oliver.”
“Well, it’s a boring but reasonable plan.”
But will it really work that easily?
Even Roland couldn’t completely prevent Chloe’s imprisonment, even though he stopped it once.
It feels like fate is pulling Chloe towards destruction with a thick thread.
“I’m worried it might end up like with Roland.”
“Yes. Even if we avoided it once, the same event might happen again on another occasion, right?”
“That was certainly an unexpected turn of events. I still regret not being more careful.”
“Even if we succeed in interfering this year, we might meet again in the same place next year.”
“But that’s not a problem. Oliver will be studying abroad in a neighboring country after the summer. His father wants him to develop an eye for things in other countries. If we can get through this summer, he won’t come back until he enters the Royal Academy at the age of fifteen.”
“That’s good. Then we can relax.”
“But we can’t let our guard down until the end of summer.”
Anyway, what’s important is this summer.
“I’ll ask Otou-sama to let me go to a summer resort.”
Because of her father’s misdeeds, she was born with a future of being sold to slave traders.
This kind of selfishness is a small price to pay.
“What about Steed?”
“Of course, I’ll be with you too. I’ll be by your side and fulfill my duties as your knight.”
“I’m fine on my own. I’ve been working hard for a year to avoid my fate of destruction.”
“But when Chloe avoids her fate, isn’t it better to have someone to brag to?”
“Well, that’s true.”
Certainly, it’s more fun to have Steed as a playmate than to go alone.
After all, it’s a summer resort.
They want to avoid destruction quickly and do things they can’t do in their daily lives.
Of course, they intend to be on guard until the end of summer.
But since they came up with a mischievous idea involving a river, they might as well put it into practice.
“I can’t wait to leave.”
As Chloe, who is suspicious of whether she can be careful until the end of summer, is grinning while imagining mischief, Steed’s face suddenly darkens.
“To be honest, I want you to stay at home.”
“Huh? Why?”
“Because I’m worried about you.”
Steed gently takes Chloe’s hand.
“You’re very charming, and I wouldn’t want Oliver to fall in love with you.”
“Steed, I don’t like that kind of talk.”
“I know. But if I don’t keep saying it like this, you’ll forget that I’m your fiancé and that I love you, won’t you?”
Unable to find a retort, Chloe is hit by the truth.
Steed mutters, “See, I knew it,” and stares at Chloe with a resentful look.
“It’s no joke that we’ll end up as rivals if we continue like this without making any progress.”
Chloe let out a sigh mixed with exasperation, thinking that such a thing could never happen.
(Only someone like Steed would like someone who pretends to be a villain like me.)
She couldn’t even understand why he was so fond of her in the first place.
Perhaps that was why she couldn’t face Steed’s feelings properly.
Is Steed really in love with her?
Maybe she’s just imagining things.
But Steed himself doesn’t seem to think so.
In his narrowed eyes, there was an uncontainable passion as he looked seriously at Chloe.
It only makes Chloe more itchy.
“Well, no matter what kind of man appears, I won’t back down. I love you the most. I have no intention of letting anyone take you away. Remember that, my beloved fiancée.”
Saying that, Steed gently kisses the back of Chloe’s hand.
It’s not the usual greeting kiss.
It’s a respectful and sincere kiss.
Chloe lets out an un-ladylike scream of “Eek!” and quickly pulls her hand away.
“Don’t kiss me without permission!”
“Okay, from now on, I’ll tell you before I touch you.”
That’s not the issue.
As Chloe clenches her fist to argue, Steed lets out a bright laugh.
