Chapter 82: Black Dawn Society (2)
The interior of the Shadow Church wasn’t particularly complex, but it was easy to get lost if you were visiting for the first time.
This was because the abnormally placed shadows and the smooth stone walls, making it difficult to distinguish front and back, disoriented the visitor’s sense of direction.
After passing through a narrow corridor split in two, I entered a small room shaped like a prayer room and sat down on a chair placed there. Like everything else in this building, the chair I sat on was made of the same material as the floor and walls.
The chair was connected to the floor as if it had risen from it.
Sitting on the hard but smooth chair, I looked at the small windows on either side.
Outside was filled with a thick fog that shimmered with a faint purple light. It wasn’t a typical scene, but it wasn’t particularly strange. This place was halfway between the material world and something else.
The purple fog, with its various colors faintly sparkling, had a strange charm that caught one’s eye.
While I was looking out the window with the faint light streaming in, a playful voice came from behind me.
“Aren’t you curious about what’s outside that window?”
An unfamiliar voice. I turned around and saw a small girl.
A tiny face with closely packed eyes, nose, and mouth. Judging by her appearance alone, one might mistake her for a cute, wealthy young lady.
“Well.”
I answered shortly and looked at her quietly.
An unusual energy emanating from her small body. Far superior to Marchena, Kazan, and the Dark Elf Siena I had encountered just moments ago.
Of course, it wasn’t surprising that she wasn’t an ordinary child. To begin with, this place wasn’t a suitable place for an innocent child.
What interested me was something else.
The strong and somewhat familiar energy that had caught my attention a while ago, even from a distance.
‘A witch?’
Black Mages, witches, and most mystics, including wizards, tend to possess a unique energy. Even if they use the same kind of power, a trace, like a fingerprint, is left depending on how they handle it.
Didn’t Marchena and Kazan chase after me because they noticed that the faint traces of the spells I used in the Ashitan Kingdom were the same as those of the Black Mage Astrid?
I stared at the witch in front of me. It was an energy that felt like I had encountered it before I was resurrected.
‘Have I seen her before?’
I briefly searched my memories. I quickly scanned the vast moments of the past, but nothing specific came to mind.
Perhaps I had encountered one of her ancestors. The lineage of a witch, unlike that of a wizard, is passed down more strongly than one might think.
“Hello, handsome older brother. Why are you here?”
The little girl greeted me with a refreshing smile. Judging by the strength of her energy, she must have lived for at least three hundred years, even at the shortest estimate.
A light greeting from such a being was a little amusing. Especially to me.
I smiled lightly as I received the cute greeting from the old witch. Did she intend to play a prank on an innocent young man?
I looked at the yellow ribbon neatly tied in her hair. What a bad taste.
Well, it’s not like I can’t play along.
“I came to carry on my master’s will.”
“……!”
A faint emotion flickered across the witch’s face at my answer. It was a subtle change that an ordinary person wouldn’t even notice, but it wasn’t enough to fool me.
As the oldest member of the Black Dawn Society, she probably knew more about the Black Mage Astrid than anyone else here.
Her round eyes darted back and forth at my short answer.
“Then can I ask how you came to be here?”
I asked, feigning curiosity with a small smile.
“This isn’t a place for a little kid like you.”
The witch smiled softly at my words. She seemed to think I hadn’t figured out her identity yet.
“That’s a secret!”
The witch said triumphantly, putting her tiny hands on her hips. It was quite natural. She seemed to have been acting like a child for more than a day or two.
“Is that so?”
I said, rummaging inside my cloak.
“If you tell me honestly, I’ll give you a present.”
Pick. At my words, a small smile appeared on her lips. An expression as if she was watching an amusing trick. She smiled slightly and asked, pretending to be curious.
“What kind of present? Candy? A doll?”
“This.”
I pulled out small trinkets from the pocket inside my cloak.
A short black candle and a crude bone ornament.
These were items I had obtained from the witch I had dealt with in Sitdria, where the giant pyre was located.
“……!”
They were hardly suitable gifts for a child. They weren’t particularly necessary for me, but the little girl’s expression hardened as she saw the items that were useful for a witch’s sorcery.
“Since when did you─”
The witch’s question,”Did you know?”was cut short. Kazan appeared from behind.
“Pekilla-nim, you were pretending to be a child again.”
He, who seemed to have come looking for me, spoke to the witch with a surprised expression.
Before the witch named Pekilla could say anything, Kazan glanced at me and continued.
“This friend won’t be so easy. Maybe he already─”
“Yes, that’s right.”
The witch, cutting off Kazan’s words, sighed and nodded. She replied in an aged tone that didn’t match her appearance, and looked at me.
“Maybe it’s true.”
“……”
At the witch’s words, Kazan glanced at me. He slowly opened his mouth, his eyes clearly filled with anticipation.
“The majority has gathered. It’s time to go to’Rosalyn’s Nightmare’.”
“Yes.”
Nodding at Kazan’s words, I dropped the trinkets I was holding into the witch’s hand.
“I didn’t tell you the truth right away, but here’s your present.”
Looking at her as she caught the items I gave her, I continued.
“It was an answer anyway.”
“……Huh.”
To the witch who let out an old-like sigh, I suddenly asked as if I had just remembered.
“You didn’t forcibly change your appearance using sorcery. Are you cursed?”
The little girl, who had received the small gift I gave her, smiled brightly and answered.
“When I was young, I accidentally drank the wrong herbal juice that my mother made.”
At the witch’s honest answer, I smiled slightly.
🔹🔹🔹
Like the Great Demon’s altar located in the Catacombs, there were places in the world where power accumulated over a long period due to various stories.
And Rosalyn’s Nightmare, located in the deepest part of the Shadow Church, was one such place.
“……”
A small courtyard located in the church.
A tense silence filled the small space filled with dimly colored grass.
The mystical purple light filled the open sky visible above the smooth walls of the church surrounding the area, but no one was surprised or admired by the sight.
Kazan, Marchena, the Dark Elf Siena I had encountered earlier, and the witch Pekilla. And the old man whose name I didn’t know.
“So, Kazan.”
The old man, leaning on his staff, spoke. His eyes behind his round glasses shone sharply.
“You said you felt a faint energy that seemed to be left by’him’in the Berenhith Forest a while ago, but you failed to break the seal there. Is this your achievement from there?”
The Berenhith Forest was where I had hidden Kamuron’s Bracelet. That was why the seal there was a bit loose.
Of course, Kazan’s answer was predetermined. Only I could break that seal.
“No, sir.”
“Then why─”
Marchena, who was watching Kazan silently answer the old man’s questions with frustration, interrupted the old man.
“You must have heard the news we delivered? Why don’t you cut the crap, Old Man Graviol?”
“……Yes, I heard it. The ridiculous news that you found a successor.”
The old man made a displeased expression at her words. Judging from the fact that he was deliberately ignoring me and asking Kazan useless questions, he didn’t seem to believe Marchena’s words.
“Then.”
The old man finally turned to me and said with a slight twist of his lips.
“This must be the successor?”
A clearly sarcastic tone.
It was an extremely rude reaction to give to someone you were meeting for the first time, but it wasn’t entirely incomprehensible.
Unlike the two who had experienced me, from his standpoint, who had never met me before, it wouldn’t be pleasant to see a young kid suddenly appearing and aiming for the position of the leader of the Dawn Society.
Pick. The Dark Elf Siena chuckled at the old man’s words. She also seemed to not acknowledge me.
“First of all, we should hear what the person himself has to say.”
Then the little girl spoke. The witch, with her cute appearance, shrugged her small shoulders and looked around at the others.
“……!”
“That’s……”
Embarrassment appeared on the faces of the old man and the Dark Elf at the witch Pekilla’s words. Her position, having lived for at least a few hundred years, seemed to be quite respected even among fellow members.
The surroundings became quiet for a moment at her words, which carried the weight of considerable time despite her thin voice.
“……”
I looked around the courtyard for a moment. Looking at the small spring in the center of the courtyard, from which a faint whisper could be heard, I slowly opened my mouth.
The highest position in the Shadow Church is nine. Of those gathered here now, excluding me, there are five.
“Four seats are empty.”
“……!”
“But since the majority has gathered, there should be no problem in making a decision.”
Various emotions appeared on the faces of the five at my words. The first to speak was the old man named Graviol.
“Marchena, just how much did you tell this outsider about the meeting information!”
An indignant voice. The old man seemed to think that the fact I knew things that an outsider wouldn’t know was because of Marchena.
“……Did you fall for him?”
The Dark Elf Siena also looked sharply at Marchena and asked. The red-haired vampire shook her head in disbelief at their words and muttered.
“You’re accusing an innocent person.”
To be precise, she’s not a person.
I looked around at the somewhat noisy surroundings. I appreciate the support, but it wasn’t necessary in the first place.
All I needed now was nothing but my own will.
“Inquisitor, Luciel Lumineger.”
As if to organize the situation, the witch Pekilla stepped forward and spoke. Despite her childlike appearance, she had an undeniable presence.
“The one who claims to be the successor of the Great Mage Astrid Elliger, the founder of the Black Dawn Society.”
The witch continued, looking into my eyes.
“Can you prove your words?”
Instead of answering her question, I slowly walked forward. The old man, leaning on his crooked staff, stared straight at me and muttered.
“If you’re lying, I’ll tear you to pieces right here.”
Somewhat arrogant words.
“But if it’s true.”
The old man continued.
“I will kneel here and apologize to you.”
The moment everyone’s eyes focused on me. I smiled slightly and said.
“That’s what will happen.”
Swoosh.
As soon as I finished speaking, the space above my head opened, and a thick demonic energy began to flow out.
