Chapter 210: The Undead Hordes (5)
A series of birds circled in the sky. Carrion birds are lured by the aroma of blood and death.
Ravens and vultures may have temporarily laid aside their long-standing animosity. There were countless corpses covering the ground.
The birds seemed unconcerned about the bodies’ hideous look, which included heads, torsos, and limbs from various species that had been hastily jumbled and mangled.
Scavenging the flesh of the deceased was preferable to the messy process of hunting. However, the magical energy penetrating the bodies’ blood played an important part in attracting the creatures.
A raven pecked at the meat with its black beak, its long, stringy tendons disappearing down its gullet, and its eyes had already become a deep red.
“Ugh, there’s another one.”
Swish! Thwack!
A stone thrown by an invisible hand broke the raven’s head, spewing brain tissue and blood everywhere. The other ravens, shocked by their companion’s demise, squawked and took to the skies.
The struck raven fell on top of a slanted, fractured stone wall, staring down at the person who threw the stone.
“Damn it.”
As the stone thrower bent down to retrieve another stone from the ground, the raven extended its wings and flew away.
The raven’s black eyes gazed out across a large, circular field. Smoke rose in wisps from various areas where little fires were burning, and troops poured sand on them to extinguish the flames.
Beyond that, there were torches and bonfires, their flames fueled by oil-soaked rags connected to long sticks.
The sun was lowering quickly, fueled by the winter frost, and the gloomy sky refused to let the celestial body say goodbye to the living beings on the ground. As a result, it was extremely dark.
With its somewhat better vision and a strong need for flesh, the raven quickly found another corpse to scavenge.
Scilio paused for a while, watching the raven fly away to a secluded area, before flipping the stone she was holding. Then she dragged away the corpse that the raven had devoured.
“How many of these creatures are creeping out? I clean them out, but they keep coming back.”
The bird had been eating the corpse of a monster. Its tongue, mangled beyond recognition, lolled forth as it lay splayed on the ground.
Calia had warned her and the others not to allow flying creatures like crows or vultures to feed on the monsters’ flesh or blood if at all possible.
Fearing that the altered birds would feed on cattle or children, Roscell had divided the work of clearing debris and hunting the birds among his troops. He also told Scilio and Weizen to prioritize killing any birds they saw.
A chunk of stone from a building’s wall lay piled on top of the already-dead corpse. It was so enormous that it would have required three or four men to carry it, but Scilio effortlessly lifted it and hurled it aside thanks to her heightened strength.
A cloud of dust puffed up, and Scilio waved her hand to dispel it.
“Ugh, my luck. Why did I have to volunteer for this?”
“Because you are getting paid, right? Duh.”
Weizen spoke from directly beside her. He grabbed a large chunk of stone and threw it into the increasing mound of rubble on the hillside.
“It’s not like we’re not gonna clean it up, it’s the new Count Roscell’s request. We’re not going to live in another city, are we? And they’re paying, what’s the problem?”
“When did you get so smart, kid? You want a punch to the face?”
“Ow, my back is still hurting. Do not hit me.”
Weizen indicated his torn clothing. Scilio snorted and picked up the monster corpse lying beneath the debris, moving it to one side.
Soldiers worked tirelessly around them, removing wreckage and sorting through monster and human corpses.
They all had faces that couldn’t quite adjust to the situation, having just been wielding swords at the command of the former count, only to now be cleaning up the city.
“Aella, is she okay?”
“I’ve heard that the dragonkin and Calia are treating her. And that priestess woman also came.”
“Speaking of that, how did those individuals get here? Do you know anything about it?”
Weizen paused before answering Scilio’s question.
“I’m not close to the church members either. That innocent-looking paladin was talking about an undead invasion or something, but I didn’t quite grasp.
“There are a lot of undead-like monsters here too. What’s happening in the world? It’s gone utterly crazy.”
Meanwhile, in a huge, open area cleared of collapsed structures, tents were lined up in rows. Because of the torches that had been set up in various spots, the temporary shelter was as brilliant as day, even in the darkness of the evening, and injured individuals sat or lay there relaxing.
There was one location where people were quite congested. People with bandages around their heads, chests, bellies, or limbs, or using crutches or canes, peered in wonder at one location.
“You’ll be fine now.”
“Next!”
“More hot water and clean rags.”
“Understood.”
Elenora, Jess in his armor, and the dark elf Lexi were caring for the injured in the largest tent. Soldiers rushed around, carrying bandages, rags, and water.
The people’s gazes were drawn to Elenora in particular.
Every time she used her holy power, her hair would glow with light, and individuals who appeared to be dying would be healed, attracting their attention.
The majority of the patients she has cured so far were on the edge of dying.
There were innumerable victims with their heads shattered and bleeding profusely, their chests crushed in from a flying stone, their lungs punctured, or one of their limbs amputated or torn off.
Elenora had healed everyone.
The bleeding had stopped, the fractured ribs and shards had reattached inside their bodies, and the severed limbs had reattached themselves, as long as they had not been left for too long.
The people who were on the edge of becoming crippled expressed tears of thanks for the great miracle.
Jess also drew a lot of attention because it was rare to see a fully armored Paladin treating wounds in person.
He was currently treating a small child whose stomach had been ripped open. The child’s parents, a man and a woman, watched with pale features and tear-stained cheeks, holding their breath.
Jess utilized his holy power to clean the exposed organs before stitching the wound with a prepared needle and thread. The mother fainted first when the sharp needle punctured the child’s fragile skin, causing a whimper. The child’s father held his wife up with a hardened expression.
After Jess had completely stitched up the wound with thread, the child’s frantic breathing subsided as he wiped away the cold sweat on his forehead. Jess spoke with the child’s parents.
“Fortunately, only the skin was severely torn, and no organs were harmed. The temperature has subsided, but he has lost a lot of blood, so make sure he drinks enough fluids and eats as many soft things as possible. The thread will fall out by itself.”
Before leaving, the child’s parents repeatedly expressed appreciation by bowing their heads. The three of them hurried rapidly to treat the patients.
With Elenora, who possessed an unusually great holy power, Jess, who was in charge of the surgery, and the agile dark elf Lexi assisting them, the formerly high number of patients was swiftly reduced.
They were only able to rest when the torches had been released and the day had changed.
They sat down, covered in other people’s blood rather than their own, and ate bread and warm stew.
Lexi asked Jess a question.
“I watched you previously and found it fascinating. Stitching up wounds using a needle and thread is an unusual approach to healing. Do Paladins know how to do that?”
“Not every Paladin can do it. Lexi, as a dark elf, you have a powerful innate healing talent. Humans, on the other hand, lack such innate healing abilities and must learn such skills. In my situation, Sir Hailyn taught me a lot. He added that if I depended too heavily on holy power, I would be unable to deal when something significant occurred……”
Jess trailed off. Elenora’s face darkened. Lexi spoke.
“Didn’t you have to go see that warlock or whatever? Is it okay to be here like this?”
In response to her question, Jess replied:
“We arrived to meet Russell-nim. Fortunately, he was present, but one of our companions was seriously injured, and this city is in a horrible situation in many respects, so we needed to assist. The Lord said, Do not turn away those in need.”
“If that’s the case, I’ve got nothing to say. Is that little dragon well cared for?
Elenora, who had been drinking water, tipped the jug and washed her hands.
“I’ve treated all the obvious external injuries. She mainly had injuries on the left side of her body. It seems that the injuries she sustained while in dragon form were reduced along with her transformation into human form. But, since she’s a dragon, not a human, and considering the circumstances of her birth, she’s closely connected to Russell-nim…… Russell-nim would be more helpful in putting out the black flames.”
“Hmm.”
Lexi turned her head. Despite the chaos, the city was not completely destroyed. The regions that had sustained the most damage were primarily the lord’s castle and its surroundings, as well as the buildings and warehouses that had been smashed by the stones thrown out by the giant.
Of course, the area where the monster and Russell fought was entirely demolished within a 300-meter radius.
There were no sacred buildings left, and the ground had sunk so far that repairing it would be difficult.
Russell, Aellasis, Calia, and Asharin were at Roscell’s private mansion. They were there to help Aellasis, who had been hurt during the attack.
“It shouldn’t be a serious wound.”
🔷🔷🔷🔷🔷🔷
Calia sat on Aellasis’ right side, Russell on her left. Asharin had created a formidable barrier around them, just in case.
They were in a chamber at Roscell’s mansion. It was a spacious room filled with fine furnishings and artwork, but there were no other staff there.
A magical circle was made in the center of the room, and Aellasis lay in it. On the magical circle, which emitted a dim light, Aellasis exhaled heavily and sweated profusely.
“Begin.”
Russell grasped Aellasis’ left wrist with his left hand and pressed his right palm against her forehead.
A new sight unfolded before Russell’s closed eyes. An endlessly long and dark corridor, with red energy occasionally flashing, followed by a blue flash.
The red energy was constantly radiating an evil aura and surged in all directions. Every time it happened, Aellasis’ body trembled, and her skin turned a deep red.
Russell gritted his teeth. The process of burning through his magical power as quickly as it recovered was agonizing.
But if he didn’t do it immediately, Aellasis would be engulfed by the black magic or turn into a mad dragon who had lost its wits. Just as her mother had.
However, she was able to resist since she was a dragon with a natural resistance to demonic power, and Russell was able to eliminate the energy that was killing her body by reintroducing his own magical power, which had served as the foundation of Aellasis, into her.
Russell was able to burn away the devil’s magic strength in what seemed like ten minutes to others but a day to him.
Russell removed his hand. Calia, who had been holding Aellasis’s right wrist opposite him, noticed Russell’s reaction and said:
“The immediate danger has passed. Now it depends on Aella’s willpower.”
“The devil’s magical power is extremely persistent. Is it a racial trait?
Calia nodded.
“It may be. They are species that inhabit severe habitats. From their point of view, this world must be a heavenly paradise.”
“Is it over?”
“Almost.”
In response to Russell’s statement, Asharin looked into Aellasis. The black energy that had surged up to her neck had nearly vanished. There were a few spots that remained, but they also faded and vanished.
🔷🔷🔷🔷🔷🔷
It had only been a day since Jayvir, the great city’s lord and castellan, transformed into a monster and went on a rampage. The night after the sun had set was so dark that the moonlight could not be seen. This was because the cloudy sky had not cleared.
The clearance of debris and treatment of the victims, which had begun at noon, had just recently been completed by the evening. After a long wait, the people assembled in Roscell’s mansion could finally exchange greetings.
