Choosing the Baby’s Father From the Following – Chapter 30.2

“Would you like to hear the baby’s heartbeat?”

At the doctor’s question, I blinked my eyes.

‘𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 21𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘺, 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦?’

Ren asked on my behalf.

“Is that even possible?”

The doctor proudly puffed out his chest.

“This is actually a trade secret. I’ve connected a magic tower amplifier to the function of a stethoscope. It’s a mystery of birth that only I can show you on this continent.”

The Mage Tower Master, disguised, twitched one eyebrow and requested.

“Let’s hear it.”

The doctor put something like a paper cup on my stomach and handed another cup at the end of the line to Ren.

Ren’s expression gradually softened as he listened to the cup-shaped device.

“Can you hear anything?”

We had introduced ourselves as a foreign noble couple introduced by the secretary of the Crown Prince Flavi, so I asked Ren in awkward honorifics.

However, he didn’t answer, seemingly focused on the sound.

“Can you hear it? Huh?”

When I asked again, Ren finally came to his senses and handed me the cup.

His cheeks were flushed, and his voice was slightly higher than usual.

“You listen too.”

Hesitantly, I put the device to my ear and felt a loud vibration.

—Thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-thump!

I frowned slightly.

“Is…is this a heartbeat? Isn’t it too……fast?”

The doctor let out a good-natured chuckle.

“A baby’s heart beats fast. Because it’s small.”

I wouldn’t know, having never been pregnant while living in the 21st century.

I was skeptical that this rapid heartbeat could be real, but Ren’s face was more serious than ever.

“Honey.”

When he called me, deeply immersed in his role-playing as my husband, I almost hiccuped.

“……Yes?”

“I’ll be a really good father. I’ll treat you well.”

Wow, Ren Dafte.

‘𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦.’

He was basically using the pretense of couple role-playing to say things forbidden under the ”truce” agreement between the three of us.

I figured Callisteon would try to kill him if he heard this, but I just smiled quietly because I was in front of the doctor.

“……I’m looking forward to it.”

Ren took a short breath, as if overwhelmed with emotion.

His usually strong, dark eyebrows drooped gently, and his dreamy lavender irises were the very picture of a man in love.

He smiled and kissed each of my cheeks in turn.

‘𝘕𝘰, 𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳.’

Thinking that, I clenched my fist over my heart, which wanted to race as fast as the baby in my belly.

On the morning of the same day, Lurick shared the news of the past week with his adjutant.

“I heard that the relocation of refugees from Heim has been decided. Should we increase the number of troops stationed in Duros just in case?”

“……What?”

Lurick’s deputy, Hessus, was puzzled by his superior’s inability to focus on the report.

He had heard that things in Heim had been resolved well, but the Second Prince seemed uncharacteristically anxious.

“Hmm.”

Hessus watched him for a moment before speaking again.

“I told you that we should prepare for the movement of Heim refugees and increase the number of troops stationed in Duros.”

“Ah, that……”

Lurick nodded.

“Do so. You are dismissed.”

Hessus bowed his head to leave but then spoke again.

“Forgive my boldness, but hadn’t the situation in Heim been resolved smoothly?”

Lurick let out a heavy sigh, and for a moment, Hessus mistakenly thought there was some hidden story behind the refugee relocation that he hadn’t heard.

“There’s no need to worry about Heim. It’s just a personal matter that’s on my mind.”

“Yes, then……”

But as Hessus turned to leave for real this time, Lurick stopped him.

“……Deputy Commander.”

“Speak freely, Commander.”

Lurick hesitated for a moment before speaking.

“You must have heard the rumors among the soldiers as well. That an evil spirit possesses me and that sometimes my eyes……”

Hessus’s face turned pale, and he interrupted his superior in a flustered voice.

“Which lunatic dared to spread such rumors? I will have them severely punished……”

“Hessus.”

However, Lurick stopped him, and Hessus had to close his mouth.

“What I want to know is……have you ever seen it yourself? My eyes changing color, that is.”
