Choosing the Baby’s Father From the Following – Chapter 1

Chapter 1

‘𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘐 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘦𝘺𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯, 𝘐 𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭…….’

That was the last wish of Ryu-ji, a terminal cancer patient in South Korea.

After wishing for it a hundred, two hundred, three hundred times, it seemed that her dream had finally come true.

‘𝘎𝘰𝘥, 𝘉𝘶𝘥𝘥𝘩𝘢, 𝘞𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘎𝘰𝘥, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶!’

Instead of the smell of alcohol from the hospital, the fluffy bed and blanket smelled of dry sunlight, and the thin sleepwear was so soft she couldn’t even feel it.

A large crystal chandelier even hung in the middle of the luxurious gold-rimmed ceiling.

There was no headache that felt like someone was sitting on the back of her neck, and her limbs, which had felt like they weren’t hers, were light.

“Ahahahahahaha!”

She must have laughed a little wildly out of sheer joy.

The bed curtains decorated with red chiffon quietly parted, and a gentle-looking maid appeared and asked,

“Are you alright, Your Highness?”

Oh my god, it’s a real success.

‘𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘭 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘐’𝘷𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘐 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘵 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘭𝘺, 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘐?’

I, Ryu-ji!

The 3 years I spent in the hospital bed immersed in romance fantasy novels weren’t in vain.

‘𝘉𝘶𝘵 ‘𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘏𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴’?’

It’s not like I’m going to be picky when I was on the verge of death, but if possible, I wish I wasn’t the main character.

Wouldn’t the main character’s life be too hard…….

‘𝘚𝘰, 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘺’𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘮 𝘐?’

When I pretended not to hear the maid’s words on purpose, as expected, the next words followed.

“Your Highness……Louise?”

Louise?

It’s similar to my name, and I like it!

No, that’s not it…

‘𝘓𝘰𝘶𝘪𝘴𝘦…’

Where did she come out from?

Louise is a pretty but common name.

‘𝘗𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦, 𝘐 𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘦 𝘐’𝘮 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘢 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘯𝘰 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴…!’

In order to properly figure out the identity of this body, I guess I’ll have to look in a mirror.

And the moment I got up,

“Ugh.”

A very familiar nausea surged up.

‘𝘖𝘩 𝘮𝘺 𝘨𝘰𝘴𝘩, 𝘢𝘮 𝘐 𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘭𝘭?’

My heart pounded at the thought that flashed through my mind.

‘𝘕𝘰, 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵…’

I barely escaped from that dreadful hospital ward!

Tears welled up in my eyes because I was so sad, and the maid in front of me came into the bed and tightly closed the curtains.

Then she lowered her voice and sobbed.

“You’ve been throwing up every chance you get for the past few days, and now you’re nauseous! I really can’t live because of Your Highness!”

All of a sudden……?

“You must be pregnant, right?! What are you going to do about this now?!”

What? Pregnant?

The maid rattled on as if she had nothing more to say.

“They say that two people go into the academy and three come out, but how could that happen to Your Highness! What will His Majesty the Emperor and His Highness Lurick do if they find out?!”

His Highness Lurick…

In the midst of confusion, the name struck me.

‘𝘓𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘊𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤 𝘍𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘉𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘢.’

It was a name I knew well enough to remember his full name.

I opened the tightly closed bed curtains again, passed the crying maid, and went to find a mirror.

My reflection, which I carefully examined, was……

‘𝘞𝘰𝘸, 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭.’

Ah, of course, that’s not important right now.

‘𝘗𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘩𝘢𝘪𝘳, 𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥-𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘦𝘺𝘦𝘴……!’

My reflection in the mirror and the name Lurick were enough for me to grasp the situation.

I hadn’t been reincarnated into a proper romance fantasy novel.

This was the world of my own scribbled draft novel, 「The Mad Dog’s Cure」, which I had written after getting tired of reading all sorts of other works.

‘𝘕𝘰, 𝘸𝘩𝘺, 𝘩𝘰𝘸……!’

There are so many decent romance fantasy novels in the world to be reincarnated into!

In the midst of this shocking reality, I barely managed to pull myself together.

‘𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘰𝘬𝘢𝘺. 「𝘔𝘢𝘥 𝘋𝘰𝘨」 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘷𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘸𝘢𝘺.’

Even though my own brother, Lurick, is the very 「Mad Dog」 in the novel, it’s not that big of a deal.

Lurick lived his whole life as the emperor’s dog, doing all sorts of dirty deeds, but he was actually a pitiful person being controlled by a magic sword.

‘𝘏𝘦’𝘭𝘭 𝘴𝘰𝘰𝘯 𝘮𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘢 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯.’

Taking revenge on the emperor who used him was just a bonus.

The problem is me, Louise.

‘𝘓𝘰𝘶𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭 𝘣𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘴!’

I quickly recalled the beginning of ‘Mad Dog’ in my head.

‘𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘵 𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺. 𝘕𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘣𝘦, 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘐 𝘸𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦.’

Louise gets into a carriage accident right before returning to the Imperial Palace after graduating from the academy.

‘𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘥, 𝘐’𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘮 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘗𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦……?’

And I’m pregnant, too.

🔹🔹🔹

“T, This pregnancy! What pregnancy!”

I don’t know the reason, but the story has already changed.

‘𝘓𝘰𝘶𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘯𝘦, 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘳. 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘐 𝘣𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦?’

Where am I, who am I …

Such worries are only possible if I’m alive.

‘𝘙𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵, 𝘪𝘧 𝘐 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘦, 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘥𝘰 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨.’

It’s not even certain if I’m pregnant or not.

“I, I’m just feeling a little sick!”

As I insisted vehemently, the maid asked, shedding tears like chicken droppings.

“Really? But you haven’t had your period this month yet…….”

Oh, crap, is that so?

I was dealt a blow by the maid’s sharp words, but I refuted them recklessly.

“S, Sometimes that happens when you’re not feeling well!”

For example, I, the terminally ill, was like that.

Fortunately, it seems irregular periods weren’t just my misfortune.

“Well, of course there were times when it was late…….”

I took advantage of the maid’s confusion and asserted more forcefully.

“Of course! If I were pregnant, my brother wouldn’t kill me, would he?”

This time, the maid countered.

“You should watch your words when you speak, Your Highness. If you’re pregnant, you’ll be the only one to survive, and everyone else will die. And that includes me, Phoebe Nilo.”

Phoebe Nilo.

‘𝘚𝘪𝘨𝘩.’

I just learned the name of the maid, who would never appear in a novel where Lurick is the main character.

And Phoebe, who had stopped crying, was a pretty helpful maid.

“Besides, His Highness Lurick is returning now.”

Right, the story begins with Lurick going crazy after hearing the news of his younger sister’s death as soon as he returns.

“If something happens to you at this point, how am I supposed to survive? I’m your shadow who even followed you to the academy!”

Therefore, Phoebe’s words were half true.

‘𝘓𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘸𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘨𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘬 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘶𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘥.’

Maybe this story won’t even begin?

‘𝘜𝘨𝘩!’

At that moment, I felt nauseous again.

‘𝘕𝘰. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘓𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘨𝘶𝘺, 𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘢 𝘣𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘬….’

His nickname was originally ‘Mad Dog’, according to the setting.

He’s a man who would be enraged enough just by his beloved younger sister getting pregnant before marriage.

‘𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘐 𝘥𝘰 𝘪𝘧 𝘐’𝘮 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘵? 𝘐 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥’𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘳…’

As I regretted it too late, Phoebe looked at my face suspiciously and said,

“Even though you moved in an unfamiliar way, it’s clear that you’re not feeling well, Your Highness. And since it might shorten my lifespan as well, I’ll have to call the royal physician.”

I was startled by the word ‘royal physician’ and countered.

“What am I supposed to tell the royal physician?”

If I was really pregnant, it wouldn’t be good for the royal physician to find out.

“If strange rumors spread, my marriage prospects will be ruined.”

Phoebe tilted her head slightly, as if she found it hard to agree with me, but didn’t refute and just sighed softly.

“In any case, you need to take care of your health until His Highness Lurick returns. He’s a very sharp man, you know.”

But right now, there’s a bigger problem than Lurick.

‘𝘐 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘧 (𝘴𝘩𝘦) 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘢 𝘣𝘰𝘺𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘢 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐’𝘮 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘵……!’

🔹🔹🔹

“This is driving me crazy!”

After Phoebe left the room, it didn’t take much effort to find traces of the ‘real’ Louise.

This was because her drawers were overflowing with letters.

Louise had that many pen pals, and I was only able to recognize three names.

‘𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘊𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘌𝘳𝘯𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘒𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘥𝘰𝘮 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘭𝘢𝘷𝘪.’

He was an extra who was supposed to be killed off for simply being with Louise when she had her accident.

‘𝘖𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘨𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘓𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘸𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘻𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘪𝘵.’

Sadly enough, the crown prince in the letters was kind and friendly.

𝐘𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤?

𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐫, 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐲 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞.

𝐈’𝐦 𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞, 𝐋𝐨𝐮.

To think an extra I only gave a name to had this kind of backstory!

I was surprised and thought about it carefully.

‘𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘢 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘺, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢 𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘺 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘮𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘤𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘺 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘥𝘶𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘳’𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦.’

However, he wouldn’t have bothered to flatter a powerless youngest princess, so his friendship must have been genuine.

‘𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘳 𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘰𝘯, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘋𝘶𝘬𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘉𝘢𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘨, 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 ‘𝘉𝘢𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘨’𝘴 𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘵’.’

Babenberg, according to the story, was the empire’s shield that had protected it from the northern barbarians for generations.

‘𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘓𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘸𝘪𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘉𝘢𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.’

Later, the female protagonist Helena steps in and negotiates peace with the northern barbarians, but if Lurick had left Babenberg alone, there would have been no need for that.

But it seemed that this Callisteon was also close to Louise.

As your senior?

‘𝘕𝘰, 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘳 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴…?’

Ugh, I almost threw up as I recalled the next name.

‘𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘥 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘛𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘔𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘙𝘦𝘯…’

Ren was as insignificant as his simple name, appearing and disappearing in a single line.

It was said that even Ren, the Mage Tower Master who was called the genius of his generation, died by Lurick’s sword.

Well, wasn’t that what it said?

I took out one of Ren’s letters and read it again.

Although it looked more like a crumpled note than a letter.

𝐈𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐤𝐞 𝐮𝐩 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦, 𝐈’𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰.

You, you woke up in my room?

Then that night, did this and that happen?

‘𝘚𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘣𝘺’𝘴 𝘧𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳?’
