Lempard couldn’t shake off the snoring that echoed from all sides.
No, it would be more accurate to say that he couldn’t shake off the thoughts of the man with black hair and purple eyes.
He was currently staying in a dormitory room. Those who were short on money had to share a room, regardless of gender.
Lempard recalled the conversation he had the previous evening.
“Hunting a devil? Which devil?”
Russell said it with a feminine expression and voice.
“Geliotos.”
Lempard’s expression hardened.
“Geliotos. . . You’re trying to hunt a dangerous devil.”
Russell glanced at Lempard.
“Do you know anything?”
“. . . . . .As a mere mercenary, what do I know?”
“Is that so?”
The conversation ended blandly, but Lempard’s mind was complicated. In fact, he hadn’t completely left the Imperial Army. He had received a formal discharge and had traveled this far from the Empire on a covert mission.
‘To hear the name of one of the great devils here. This is no coincidence.’
While he was lost in thought,
Ding-ding-ding-ding. . .
Lempard jumped up. The sound of an urgent bell. There was only one situation where such a sound would ring out.
“It’s an ambush!”
🔷🔷🔷🔷🔷🔷
A quiet night sky. The forest at night is not normally this quiet. The grasshoppers’ sound, which should have been buzzing loudly regardless of day or night, suddenly stopped.
Animals that graze on grass and beasts that prey on those animals all lowered their bodies and held their breaths without exception.
Thud, thud, thud, thud!
It was because of the relentless advance of dozens—close to a hundred—monsters. The monsters, which had been running relentlessly through the forest as dark as a cave, reached their intended destination.
The moment of impact was sudden.
Bang!
One of the guards, who had been dozing against the fence, raised his head at the sudden loud noise and vibration. Penzer, one of the guards who managed the lodge, wiped away the saliva flowing from his mouth.
“W, What the hell? What is that noise?”
Thud! Thud! Thud!
To shake off his sleep, Penzer blinked his eyes and looked below the fence. He was also shocked.
“W, What!”
There were goblins there, with a color somewhere between green and gray. They seemed to number about a hundred. And Penzer realized that their faces were the same as goblins, but what was below was different.
They were much taller and as large as adults. No, even the most seasoned warriors couldn’t compare to their well-developed muscles.
Krrrrrr!
The goblins each let out a roar as they continued to race towards the fence, crashing into it. The red-eyed bastards banged on the fence gate, bang, bang.
Penzer screamed at the uninvited guests’ violent greeting.
“Emergency! Emergency! Goblins, goblins!”
Ding-ding-ding-ding.
An urgent bell rang out from the watchtower. The bell woke the lodge. It was a signal that the invaders had arrived.
“Shoot!”
Hearing Penzer’s cry, the guards on the fence ran up, loaded their arrows into their bows, and shot them.
Swish, swish, swish!
Thud, thud, thud!
In addition to those who fired directly, there were also those who fired with crossbows. There were more crossbowmen. Archery is a difficult skill to master. On the other hand, crossbows are easy to use because you just need to aim at the target and pull the trigger.
Caw!
Kak! Kak!
The arrows struck the monsters, causing them to grunt in pain. But none of them died. They remained embedded in the skin, albeit at a shallow depth.
To deal a proper blow, it’s best to aim for places like the eyes, but it’s difficult to hit monsters that are constantly moving.
“Arrows! Are there no more arrows?!”
“I went to get them! Just wait a little longer. . .”
At that moment, an ominous crackling sound reached people’s ears. Everyone examined each other’s faces with ominous expressions.
Penzer understood that the dumbfounded face of the person in front of him was no different from his own.
The fence, consisting of a solid rock foundation, gravel-filled gaps, and thick logs erected on top, was gradually deteriorating.
The mutant goblins’ power, strengthened by the devil’s magic and the human sacrifices they had eaten, was not sufficient to destroy the fence individually. However, as their numbers exceeded a hundred, they were able to continuously deliver a shock comparable to several trolls.
Whack!
“No!”
It’s not clear which came first—the sound of the fence collapsing or the fencer’s scream. The monsters had broken the boundary, which was important.
Kee-ah-ah-ah!
Large goblins stormed into the lodge. The eyes were looking forward to the carnage, and the drooling teeth shone red under the torches set up throughout the lodge.
🔷🔷🔷🔷🔷🔷
Russell’s party left the inn immediately. Aellasis frowned as she still had muscle pain, but she didn’t spare her body from the smell of monsters and the traces of evil magic in the air.
The monsters had already broken into the lodge. Those who had been resting on the fence, thinking they were safe, died without even being armed while fighting goblins.
Kai said.
“I think it would be better to scatter than to stay together.”
“I think so too.”
Calia’s eyes flashed red. She stomped on the floor. Then the blood that the dirt floor had absorbed gurgled out. As she waved her hand, a long spear emerged from the pool of blood.
“I’ll do the slaughter. How dare you disturb my time?”
Aellasis glanced at Calia, then stepped back.
“What’s wrong, old lady? You’re a little scary today.”
Kai asked Russell.
“What happened?”
“. . . . . .Nothing.”
The party swiftly divided into three groups. Kai headed towards the tents where the merchants and mercenaries were, and Calia and Aella headed towards the tavern and buildings.
Russell headed for the fence.
🔷🔷🔷🔷🔷🔷
The goblins were tough.
“What the hell, these bastards!”
“F*ck, f*ck, f*ck!”
There was a guy who had his organs hanging out of his ripped belly like a tongue, a guy who had bones sticking out of his broken leg but not stopping, and a guy who had his muscles exposed on his burnt skin.
Their blind movements to kill humans made the mercenaries sick.
The overwhelming strength and size of the monsters, which were clearly different from the goblins they usually faced, increased the number of corpses. They didn’t have crude bows or spears, but the speed with which the guys ran with their muscles inflated was like a bullet, and their elongated arms and claws at the end were not envious of the spear blade.
The lodge’s soldiers and mercenaries tried to prevent the goblins from going behind where they were, but they gradually collapsed like a hole in a dam.
It was just before the front line completely collapsed that Russell arrived. He calmly checked the situation and pulled out two weapons from his coat. Then, like a lion, he jumped up and landed in the middle of the monsters.
The mercenaries, stunned by his presence, let out a shout.
“H, Hey! The front line━”
Russell didn’t care. The front line is ultimately a line where trained soldiers form a certain formation and hold their shields in accordance with the signal, or hold swords or spears.
Who in the lodge has received such training? They all risk their lives for a commission and live day by day.
Russell rarely needed a front line or a rear guard. His field of vision is wide. He can see and feel much more than the normal field of vision.
He first split the head of one of the guys who ran in first with a downward strike from Final Frost. The cut surface froze and cracked, and the goblin died on the spot.
On the other hand, he held Nahilnir, a greatsword. Under the moonlit night sky, the runes engraved on the blade of the great sword shone brightly.
“I’m a little short on sleep tonight. Why is my body feeling so good?”
He laughed fiercely at the goblins, who had grown muscular and taller. They were completely different from the guys he had seen since entering this forest.
The guys who had only reached his thighs now reached his chest, and their overly grown muscles were ugly, with blood vessels throbbing.
Is there a difference in the individuals’ physical characteristics among the enhanced goblins? One of them struck faster than his other hesitant companions.
Four shiny claws. Claws are sharp enough to make deep dents even in hard wood. Their strength surpasses that of the typical goblins.
Russell’s response to the outstanding monster was straightforward. He just stepped aside and drew his weapon. Russell’s cutting force and the inertia of the guy running met. The upper body flew off whole.
Three more approached in a row. They wielded their bloodlust indiscriminately. It was easily avoided. Those who simply apply force without any skill or knowledge need to make much larger movements.
Russell’s eyes read the appropriate dodging path and timing. The goblin’s upper body was heading towards Russell, who had dodged to the right. The claws didn’t fit, so the monster intended to bite him with his teeth.
But the monster’s mind was too hasty. The sideways turn of the upper body caused the lower body to lose equilibrium, leading Russell to easily strike the falling monster’s neck with an axe. This action could be considered a form of suicide.
The guy who had given his neck to his own momentum and weight fell forward.
Russell drew attention noisily.
Clang! Clang! Clang!
“Look at me, you bastards!”
The clash of the axe and the greatsword produced an overwhelming noise. The goblins with enhanced senses glared at Russell, their ears covered, and screamed. They stomped on the floor with their elongated legs.
The monsters became twigs, swept away by a typhoon. They broke, smashed, and scattered here and there. Immediately, the floor transformed into a sea of blood.
Blood, entrails, flesh, and groans. A scene of hell. Humans and monsters alike.
The goblins’ blood was a deep black. At times, the excessively thick black blood resembled a liquid, flowing like darkness. A simple demise.
A new guy appeared, as if he had stepped on a dead goblin and jumped up. He had been hidden by the guy who had died earlier. Russell didn’t avoid it and raised his arm.
That’s right, the goblin bit Russell’s left arm. The goblin made a creepy crackling sound as its teeth broke and its gums crumpled. The weapon pierced the man’s back of the head, causing him to recoil in agony.
Blood splattered. The goblin twitched, rolled its eyes, and died.
The number of goblins was large. However, there was no sign of a monster acting as their commander.
There is a limit to an uncontrolled group’s mass offensive. There is always a gap, no matter how small, in the space of that limit, and Russell thrust his greatsword towards the margin.
A hand swung, and the body charged like a bullet. Murderous intent towards the prey.
Russell calmly made his way. Blood and flesh flowed around him like a fog.
Before he knew it, Russell’s eyes were burning with magic. The starry night sky illuminated the tents beneath the flickering torches.
All of Russell’s senses were burning hot, and he was reading the situation around him. He could see large goblins running, the sparks of the burning torches, black drops of blood flowing down the greatsword, and black crystals falling like grains of sand on the white axe blade, creating a tinkling sound.
The greatsword flies, and the axe swings. Every swing is guaranteed to harvest a life.
“Oh, oh. . .”
“W, What is that guy doing? Is he human?”
The surviving mercenaries stared blankly at Russell, who was running wild like a lion among a flock of sheep, without a single wound among dozens of mutant goblins.
Among them were Lempard, Brita, and Cohen.
“. . . It seems the rumors are not lies.”
How many goblins did he kill? Russell listened to his senses’ warnings and rolled his body.
Poof!
Suddenly, a loud noise erupted, and blue flames spread, covering Russell’s spot and the area around it.
“Kyaaaah!”
The flames consumed dozens of people, turning them to ashes before they could even scream.
Even in the midst of the chaotic situation, the loud noise caught attention.
There was a giant there wearing a hat decorated with bear skin and feathers. His skin was green, and his grim face had two protruding fangs.
At the top of the bone staff he was holding in his hand, the holes in the eyes, nose, and mouth of the skull without a lower jaw, were flickering with blue flames.
“This is an unexpected variable.”
The orc said. His gaze went to Russell, who was standing alone among the monsters’ corpses.
“You are━”
The orc’s words were cut off.
In an instant, Russell’s thigh muscles contracted and held a fearsome force. The firmly packed ground couldn’t withstand the force and cracked. When the floor burst, Russell was no longer there.
Kwang!
The orc’s skull staff and Russell’s Nahilnir collided, creating a huge shock wave. The gap was clear.
While the nameless orc was holding a staff with both hands and blocking the great sword, Russell was holding it down with one hand.
However, Russell’s eyes were different. He thought he was a wizard without fail, but his reaction speed and strength were no less than those of a warrior.
Swoosh!
The axe in Russell’s other hand screamed as it drew sideways, freezing the void. Blue flames flashed inside the orc’s eyes.
Thud!
Surprisingly, the orc took one hand off the staff and barehandedly grasped the axe. No, it wasn’t bare hands.
The orc’s hand, reinforced by the devil’s magic, had become stronger than steel and was blocking the axe blade. Whether the spell was late or the axe’s sharpness was beyond imagination, it cut and invaded more than half of the palm up to the wrist.
“You are the warrior who killed Logos.”
The voice of the one who was blocking the greatsword with a bone staff and the axe with one hand was unbelievably calm. However, the sweat dripping down his green skin didn’t lie.
Russell grinned.
“Yes, you bastard. Wait, I’ll kill you soon.”
It was not only a declaration to the orc, but also to its master. The blue flame eyes and the crimson eyes stared at each other.
