𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟒𝟗: 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐚 1
Gobi Gurvansaikhan, Mongolia.
A cool breeze, unusual for a desert, blew through the Yolyn Am, a steep canyon in the barren land.
Sharp mountain peaks and a glacier in between created a chilling, icy valley with refreshing water.
Uljibataar, the number one hunter of Mongolia, stroked the neck of his horse with his hand as big as a cauldron lid.
“There, there, easy now. Drink slowly.”
His horse, its fur as black as his pupils, began to drink water, snorting.
Uljibataar washed his blood-stained hands a little further away.
The blood dissolved in the cold water like crimson paint.
“Chief, I’m tired.”
A woman with long hair, who had been resting below the canyon, whined.
“Bear with it a little longer, Sansar.”
“I’m hungry. Is there anything to eat?”
“You only know how to talk about food.”
Uljibataar took out a piece of Mongolian jerky, Borts, from his goatskin bag and threw it to her.
“Oh, yey!”
“Eat it sparingly. This is our food for today. . . Can’t you hear me?”
“What did you?”
Sansar asked back, munching on a whole piece of Borts and mumbling.
“It seems God gave you talent but took away your manners.”
“Hmm~ It’s delicious. Do you have any more?”
“Are you listening to me?”
“Hmm? Is there more Borts?”
“God has forsaken me.”
“?”
Uljibataar shook his head and brought Sansar’s horse next to his own to let it quench its thirst.
“Chief, aren’t you going inside the Gate?”
“President Gantulga asked me to kill the monster that came out first. Since there are other warriors inside, it should be fine.”
“But it’s an S-rank Gate.”
“. . . A warrior only believes and waits.”
His younger brother, Tolga, was among those inside.
Although they were half-brothers, he cared for Tolga as much as his own sibling.
Everyone who entered the Gate had someone they considered family.
Uljibataar recalled his mission once again.
To catch the monster that escaped from the Gate, and to kill the ones that came out after it.
‘Goddamn it. . . .’
Uljibataar swallowed his anger as he thought about what he couldn’t tell Sansar.
President Gantulga had predicted that the S-rank Gate expedition had an 80% chance of failure.
He had expected the deaths of over a hundred hunters who had gone inside.
However, Uljibataar couldn’t refute the president’s words.
Gantulga was also a Hunter and a brave chieftain of the steppe. So Uljibataar knew how complicated his feelings were when he said those words.
‘I will just do my part. I’ll leave the things inside to my brothers inside.’
He washed his face with the icy water of the valley and regained his determination.
“Chief, I’m hungry.”
“. . . You already ate my share.”
“Should I eat some monster meat?”
“Did God take away your personality as well as your manners?”
“Chief, have you ever eaten an Orc?”
“Don’t talk nonsense.”
At that moment, a falcon swooped down from the sky with a screech.
“Tau is here.”
The falcon landed on the leather guard on Uljibataar’s arm and rubbed its beak against his cheek.
“Hmm. Yes? I see. I understand.”
He nodded and called Sansar.
“Get on your horse.”
“Why? Did Tau find something?”
“He says he found something strange in the canyon gap.”
Sansar pouted as if she was annoyed, but she obediently got on her horse.
“Let’s go, Ibich!”
Uljibataar’s horse charged forward, followed by Sansar’s.
The two horses galloped through the canyon, breathing heavily.
They ran like that for dozens of minutes.
Suddenly, the horses whinnied and refused to go forward.
“Whoa, whoa. Calm down.”
Uljibataar patted the horses’ necks to calm them down.
“We’ll get off here.”
“Good luck, Chief.”
“. . . You’re coming too, Sansar.”
“Huh? I have to watch the horses.”
“You’ll just abandon them and run away if something happens.”
“Well. . . My life is precious.”
He shook his head and grabbed Sansar’s collar, lifting her up.
“Eek! Put me down!!”
“You’re not fit to be a warrior.”
“Chief! I’m a woman!”
Uljibataar put her down on the ground and pulled out the Crescent Blade from his waist.
Its long blade glistened coldly in the canyon wind.
“Sansar, you be careful too. It’s a monster that came out of an S-rank Gate.”
“Is it as much of a monster as the Chief?”
Sansar knew better than anyone how strong Uljibataar, the chieftain, was.
“A warrior never lets his guard down.”
He walked along the icy valley water.
The closer he got, the more ferocious the aura became, as if it was burning his skin.
A moment later.
He saw a huge monster on the other side of the canyon detour.
“This is crazy. . . .”
Uljibataar’s jaw tightened.
A one-eyed giant from Greek mythology, the Cyclops.
Uljibataar was considered tall in his tribe, but he only seemed half the size of the Cyclops.
The giant moved slowly, blinking its single, large eye.
The eye socket was twisted, and the eyeball on its forehead looked around as if searching for something.
“Chief. . . . I think I left the fire on at home.”
“Don’t worry. Your grandmother is at home.”
“Grandma’s sleeping. . . I’m going back.”
“Let’s catch that guy and go together.”
“Damn it! Why me, a weak woman like me?”
“. . . Because you’re the number two Hunter in Mongolia.”
Sansar regretted taking the ranking test.
‘Damn it, I shouldn’t have lost my mind over a few glasses of Airag (Mongolian traditional liquor).’
She grumbled and took out the bow she had been carrying on her back.
It was a crude bow, but it was an artifact considered a treasure in Mongolia.
Sansar hooked an arrow on her thumb and pulled the string.
“Chief, go as soon as I give you the signal.”
“I’ll do as usual.”
A blue magic power gathered on the tip of her arrow like a waterfall.
Feeling the energy, the Cyclops turned its body to find its opponent.
Piiing!
The arrow, sharp as an awl, pierced the Cyclops’ one eye.
Gggrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!
At that moment, Uljibataar’s body quickly charged towards the monster, and the Crescent Blade in his hand mercilessly cut the Cyclops’ both Achilles tendons.
Kuwooooooong!
The ground shook as if there had been an earthquake as the monster’s body collapsed.
The Cyclops, unable to use its eyes and feet, was no longer a being to be wary of, but prey.
“Heup!!”
Uljibataar climbed onto its neck and balanced himself by putting his feet in its armpits, then stabbed the Crescent Blade into its neck and twisted it left and right.
Grrrrrr. . . Keuk. . . .
It trembled and soon its remaining upper body collapsed to the canyon floor.
“Whew.”
“Chief! We did it!”
Sansar jumped up from her spot and celebrated the end of the hunt.
“What about the Core? Should we take it out now?”
“There’s no time. We have to go and wait in front of the Gate now.”
Uljibataar roughly wiped the blood on his hand on his pants and jumped off the monster’s body.
『My little brother?』
Suddenly, a spine-chilling voice came from behind him.
He felt goosebumps all over his body at the monster’s dignified voice.
““Arghhhhhh!!!!”
Uljibataar shook off the monster’s aura with his fighting spirit and swung his sword.
Clang.
However, the attack was blocked too easily.
His opponent was a Cyclops as small and dwarf-like as Sansar.
However, the magic power and murderous intent emanating from it overwhelmed the Cyclops he had just killed.
『You killed? My little brother?』
Its black eyeballs stared straight at Uljibataar.
In an instant, Sansar’s bowstring ignited and a dozen arrows shot towards it.
Tatatatatat.
However, the Cyclops didn’t show any sign of pain even with the arrows embedded in its body.
『It hurts. You too, my little brother?』
It just looked at her with its creepy eyeball and asked a question.
“Run away, Sansar!”
As Uljibataar’s fierce cry echoed, the Cyclops’ fist mercilessly pierced his stomach.
Puuuuuuuuuuung!
“Chief!!!”
Sansar called out to him, her voice filled with anguish.
“Hurry. . . Run away!!”
Uljibataar didn’t collapse.
A fearsome aura emanated from his body and the Crescent Blade screamed.
『You killed with this?』
At the end of its question, a fierce magic power surged.
At that moment, the Crescent Blade cut the Cyclops’ body in half from top to bottom.
With a thud, the feeling of muscles and bones being severed was transmitted to his hand through the tip of the sword.
It was definitely a valid attack.
Uljibataar had slaughtered countless monsters with his beloved Crescent Blade.
He had countless experiences of cutting through flesh and severing Cores and entrails.
However, there was a strange discomfort when he cut the monster in half.
‘There’s no blood?!’
There wasn’t a single drop of the usual blood.
As if torn clay was sticking back together, the Cyclops’ body merged back together, rendering the attack useless.
The monster opened its mouth, bringing its pitch-black eyes right in front of Uljibataar’s nose.
『It hurts.』
Razor-sharp teeth came into view.
“Damn. . . .”
Uljibataar let out a sigh without realizing it.
The Cyclops’ fist was raised and headed straight for Uljibataar’s heart.
He knew instinctively.
That this attack could never be blocked with a sword.
‘I guess this is the end for me.’
Would his excuse of bad compatibility work for his brothers?
It was a lifelong regret to die without seeing the return of those who had entered the Gate, but Uljibataar calmly faced his death.
At that moment, a huge roar shook the canyon.
Zeeeeeeeeeng!!
The Cyclops’ body was crushed by the enormous pressure, breaking the ground and slamming into the floor.
“Chieeeeef!!”
Sansar, who hadn’t run away, kicked the ground and ran to his side.
“Sansar. . . Did you do that?”
“Are you crazy? If I had that kind of ability, I would have gotten a job in another country!”
She replied with a surprised face, thinking it was Uljibataar’s new skill.
Thud.
At that moment, someone jumped down from the canyon and stood in front of them.
“Huh?!”
Sansar immediately pulled the string of her bow with a nervous face.
“It’s too cold of a response for saving your life.”
【𝐈𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐡𝐨𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐭!】
A man with a doll made of black fur on his shoulder spoke, his eyes sharp.
“My mother said not to trust men and starving beasts.”
Sansar glared at the man, not releasing the tension in her thumb.
The man shrugged with a languid and bored expression.
“An excellent sentiment. But I doubt she taught you to turn a bow on your savior. Especially a great warrior of Mongolia.”
“She . . . well . . . she didn’t say . . . maybe I should ask . . . .”
“Sansar. Lower your bow. He saved your life.”
Uljibataar stepped into the conversation, lowering her arm.
“Chief? What if he turns on us?”
“He won’t. I can sense it. A warrior’s intuition . . . .”
“No, not him, Chief. What if he turns on me? You’ll just leave me?”
Uljibataar nodded slowly, her face saying, Of course I would.
